On May 23rd, my oldest son's school, Round Meadow Elementary, will be
hosting its Annual Carnival & Silent Auction, one of the school's largest
fundraisers.  The success of this event is crucial in order to continue
paying the salaries of the Librarian, Computer Specialist, Music Specialist,
Art Specialist and Physical Education Specialist.  Last year, the money
raised was used to help the school purchase books, computers, and other
materials needed for the further education of the children. This year we
have opted to use the net proceeds from the auction to accomplish two
objectives: 
1)continue to enhance the quality of education that we have been able to
provide for our students at Round Meadow; and
2) help enhance the quality of education and benefits for other needy
students in the greater Los Angeles area. Thus, we will donate a percentage
of our auction proceeds to the Los Angeles based charity "A Place Called
Home". The auction committee believes that this is an excellent opportunity
to demonstrate to our students the virtue of helping others less fortunate.

which is distributed to all of the Round Meadow families. All proceeds from

Brainy Baby
A recent study found that infants and toddlers under the age of two can
learn from DVDs designed to teach young children shapes. In the past, there
have been many non-scientific studies done with Brainy Baby’s competitors,
which only shed light on the disadvantages of television on a young child.
This study is the first experimental study that has used a control group to
test the effectiveness of educational DVDs, and it has proven that children
can learn pre-school concepts from Brainy Baby’s Shapes & Colors DVD. The
results indicate that toddlers were able to learn a novel word from videos
and apply that information in a different context. The study will be
published fall 2010 in The Journal of Children and Media, (JOCAM).
