Play and Grow Smart-er Tips
Nancy Pyne-Hapke, author of Play and Grow Smart, A Guide Supporting Brain
Development, Birth through Five, has been giving tips to aid your child's
optimum skill development through proactive neuroscience-based activities
every Monday. These ideas come from scholarly sources to personal
interviews, from the internet to periodicals to books.
"LIFE SKILLS" developmental skill definition: personal care, responsibility,
self-reliance, invention, resourcefulness, ingenuity, invention.
THE CRITICAL WINDOWS during which the circuits of the brain are being most
heavily wired for LIFE SKILLS is birth to 5 years old. . The more
opportunity children have to experience healthy, positive and nurturing life
skill experiences during this critical period, the more efficiently their
brains will work over the long run.
A FEW DEVELOPMENTAL LEARNING TOOLS (toys and other objects) for LIFE SKILLS:
. household/realistic toys
. puzzles . toy telephone . dolls/stuffed
animals . construction or building toys
. craft projects . investigative toys . costumes and
props . play figures/structures involving 2 or more
players
Some general Life Skills tidbits:
. INITIALLY, BABY BEGINS picking up pieces of food and stuffing it into her
mouth. Soon after, she drinks from a two-handled cup with a "spout," uses a
spoon or fork, scribbles well, brushes teeth with help, and pretends to feed
a doll. Later, she's able to put some clothes on and take some clothes off.
Communicating in sentences and becoming toilet trained follows. Soon she's
playing with other children, taking turns and following the rules. These
are all imitative steps toward becoming a creative, well-functioned and
self-directed person - a successful problem-solver who can think "out of the
box."
. TALK ABOUT/LISTEN TO house sounds - crackling of cellophane when a loaf of
bread is opened, doors opening/closing, clanging of putting plates in the
cupboard/on the table, toaster dinging, phone ringing, the vacuum, garbage
disposal, water, pet noises, etc.
. AS YOU CARRY ON DAILY CHORES, talk about objects around the house. Show
him different uses for the same thing - dig with a spoon, eat with a spoon;
drink from a container, pour from a container.
. IN THE CAR, point out things like trees, houses, people walking dogs,
cars, big trucks and stop signs.
. NAME THINGS that are the same/different, bigger/smaller, hot/cold,
tall/short, high/low, moving/still, light/dark, noisy/quiet, etc.
. OFFER CHOICES. She can tell you if she wants to wear red or blue today
or she wants a banana or cracker.
. WHEN DRESSING Toddler/Preschooler, name items/colors and count how many
(counting/sequencing backward is -, forward is +).
. WHEN VACUUMING, give him a pretend or child-sized vacuum to copy you; when
fixing dinner, let him play with plastic dishes.

DECEMBER Annual Sales -- CHEAPER AROUND CHRISTMAS
Some things are actually cheaper during the season. It's that old supply
and demand thing. 7-1/2 watt Christmas tree lights can cost as little as 10
cents apiece. These are the same lights that go into nite lights (usually
white or clear) that many people use to illuminate their hallways. Yet if
you go to a store for a nightlight bulb you can pay as much as 70 cents
apiece. So buy a bunch. The same is true for candles. If you like to burn
a candle or two other times of the year, you will pay a small fortune. Yet
at Christmas, candles are cheap. If you live in an area where the power
seems to get knocked out during a hurricane or a winter storm, having a
supply of candles is very comforting.
Stock up on these two items and buy enough to last until this time next year
-- FREE CALENDARS, PLANNERS
You can often find free calendars at restaurants, hardware stores, utility
companies and many other locations. You may be able to find quite a variety
including desk calendars, small wallet size calendars about the size of a
business card and even some on bamboo from a Chinese restaurant or full wall
calendars with phases of the moon and Farmer's Almanac type information.
Also banks and tax services often give out a number of different record
keeping books. For example, free planners may be available from banks, but
often you have to ask. Tax log booklets for recording tax deductible
expenses are often free from tax services.
BEWARE: When you exchange or get a refund for a Christmas gift make sure
that you get what you're owed:
. #1. Get a refund or credit for the price that was really paid. Since so
many items go on sale right after Christmas, clerks may only credit you for
the current sale price, not the actual price that was paid. This is not
proper. Insist on getting a full credit or refund.
. #2. Make sure that any tax is also refunded. Stores have a way of
"forgetting" to refund the tax.
BEWARE: Jewelry stores often promote big sales around Christmas, but the
savings are often not much more than the regular price. Don't be fooled.
TYPICAL ANNUAL SALES: The day 'AFTER' Christmas prices drop dramatically.
We suggest parents give their kids some cash to spend on sales during this
time period. Items like bathrobes and sweaters can be cut in half along
with other Christmas items.
MAJOR PURCHASES TYPICALLY ON SALE: Don't buy anything around Christmas!
TRAVEL: Early December is a great time to go to Florida when it is often a
good bargain and less crowded.
FRUITS AND VEGETABLES: apples, broccoli, brussel sprouts, cabbage,
cauliflower, celery, collards, cranberries, endive, grapefruit, kale,
mushrooms, oranges, parsley, rutabagas, winter squash, turnips. NOTE: With
some produce now available all during the year, many people have forgotten
when fruits and vegetables are really fresh. Buying in season means that
these items are often cheaper, fresher, taste better and that money may be
going to local farmers.

How To Be A Fantastic Parent
As parents we have a very important role in shaping our kids to be good
contributing members of society. Parenthood is a journey. A long journey.
As our kids grow up, they are constantly changing, and new challenges
present themselves at every turn. A sense of empowerment as a parent leads
to greater confidence, consistency and dependability in whatever life throws
at you.
1. Begin with the end in mind. Take a minute to think about the type of
parent you want to be.
2. Family schedule.
3. Revisit your priorities. Set your priorities and don't expect to be able
to do it all.
4. Solicit advice from people you trust.
5. Spend quality time with your kids. There is nothing your kids like more
than spending time with you.
6. Show them respect. These little people are just that - little people.
7. Love your kids but set limits. It's important to show
<http://www.serenejourney.com/2009/08/show-your-kids-you-love-them/> our
<http://www.serenejourney.com/2009/08/show-your-kids-you-love-them/> kids
we love them.
8. Lead by example. "Be the change you wish to see in the world"
9. Cultivate gratitude.
10. Relax.
