Play and Grow Smart-er Tips
Nancy Pyne-Hapke, author of Play and Grow Smart, A Guide Supporting Brain
Development, Birth through Five, has been giving tips to aid your child's
optimum skill development through proactive neuroscience-based activities
every Monday.  These ideas come from scholarly sources to personal
interviews, from the internet to periodicals to books.  
"VISUAL" developmental skill definition: seeing, distinguishing images,
focusing on stimuli, tracking images, remembering images, looking at items
sequentially, forming mental images. 
THE CRITICAL WINDOWS during which the circuits of the brain are being most
heavily wired for Visual Acuity is birth to 6 months and Binocular Vision is
1 to 3 years.  The more opportunity children have to experience healthy,
positive and nurturing visual experiences during this critical period, the
more efficiently their brains will work over the long run.
A FEW DEVELOPMENTAL LEARNING TOOLS (toys and other objects) for the Visual
sense:  . products with patterns/textures            
. tracking toys           . toys with mirrors/faces                  .
products holding familiar photos            . toys with contrasting colors
. bubble pipes          . items that wave in the breeze     . spatial- and
size-relationship items       . activity centers                 
Some general Visual tidbits:
.  80% OF LEARNING in a child's first 12 years comes through the eyes,
although vision is the least mature of the senses at birth.  Visual stimuli
in the first 6 months which creates permanent neural connections leads to
physical accomplishments such as sitting, rolling over, crawling and
walking.
.  AS INFANTS RESPOND 1st to people then objects, offer visual stimulation
w/ smiley faces and high contrast, bright color designs.
.  VISUAL ABILITIES involve being able to track movement, remember what's
been seen, look at items sequentially, focus on stimuli and form images
mentally with or w/o auditory cues. These skills begin to develop during
infancy, as vision reaches 20/20 about 9 mo.
.  WITH NEWBORN WIRING, Baby's clearest vision to 3 mo. is peripheral.  By 1
or 2 months, both eyes will focus on a single object 10" to 15" away.  Depth
perception comes later.  Movement and high-contrast patterns (light vs.
dark, white vs. black) are seen most easily.
.  SEEING IN BLACK/WHITE changes to seeing in color at about 6 to 8 weeks
old.  Then come primary colors.  Pastels are seen later.
.  BY 4 MONTHS, Baby should be able to focus both eyes on 1 object (aligned
vision, scanning and tracking) while following vertical motion, uses
eyes/hands together, sees and rakes objects toward himself, watches himself
as he moves objects from hand to hand.
.  FROM 6 MONTHS, "Peek-a-Boo," "Hide 'n' Seek," and "Look what I found!"
provide visual stimulation.
.  FROM 9 to 12 MONTHS, consider giving her a drawer or cupboard of her own
to store some toys in a room or 2 where the family congregates as she likes
to pull things out of drawers, shelves, dishpans, buckets and cardboard
boxes.

Grandma Left Kids in Car to Go Shopping - Were They YOUR Kids?

"So today my hubby and I took the kids to run some errands. We parked in the
big parking lot for Bed, Bath & Beyond in Canoga Park/Woodland Hills. When
we got out of our car, I was a bit startled to see that there were 2 kids
left alone in the car that was parked next to us. There were 2 little boys
inside, one about 5 in the front seat (illegal for a kid this age to be in
the front seat, I might add) and one in the back seat, about age 3, sitting
directly behind the passenger seat. The car was left running. The little boy
in the front seat looked at me with a look I would describe as worried. The
car was a silver Toyota Corolla. Both boys had short, dark hair. I pointed
this situation out to my husband and he was also concerned. It is illegal
and dangerous to leave small children unattended for a period of time in a
parked (and running!) car. I was wondering what we should do, when I saw a
woman come out of Bed, Bath & Beyond with a package. The front of the store
was not near the parked car and there was no way she would be able to see
the car or the children from inside the store, or outside the store. She was
a slender woman with a blonde bob. She put items in the trunk, then got into
the car. I didn't say anything; at the time I was just relieved that she had
come back. But who knows how many other errands she went on before or after
this excursion, leaving the kids in the car. I was hoping that maybe someone
would recognize these boys as their own. It really just isn't cool to do
this sort of thing in this day and age. It has been bothering me ever since.
I can't get that poor little boy's worried expression out of my mind. I just
wonder if their mother knows what Grandma's doing with them when she takes
them off her hands for awhile."

Remove Allergens and Dust Mites from Stuffed Animals & Toys 
If your children have stuffed animals, it can be alarming just how much they
can become laden with allergy-causing dust mites. However, it is quite easy
to kill all the dust mites in stuffed toys without having to constantly be
washing them and drying them. To kill dust mites in stuffed animals, simply
wrap them in plastic - such as placing them in a ziploc bag - then just pop
them in the freezer for a few hours. Freezing will kill the dust mites
living within the fluff and stuffing. This tip also works on pillows too!
Just make sure you wrap them well in plastic, and it will need a bit longer
in the freezer since they are so much larger than stuffed animals. Do this
every week or so, to keep the toys dust mite free. It is easy to just pop
them in right before going out and running errands, that way you don't need
to worry about your child wanting the stuffed toy while it is being
de-mited!
