Memorial Day
Memorial Day is officially celebrated on the last Monday during the month of
May. Memorial Day is dedicated to service men and women who gave their lives
for freedom and country. It is also a time to remember loved ones who have
passed away. The roots of Memorial Day go back to 1865 and the end of the
Civil War. Memorial Day was traditionally held on the 30th of May. In 1971,
Congress changed it to the last Monday in order to afford a three day
holiday weekend. Regardless of the date, all are encouraged to attend a
parade, and visit a cemetery to honor and remember our servicemen. Take time
to remember lost loved ones in whatever way you feel appropriate. Did you
Know? Memorial Day was first called Decoration Day. It was changed to
Memorial Day in 1882. Memorial Day also marks the beginning of the
gardening and summer seasons, even though summer will not occur for a few
weeks later. It is usually marked by holding the first family picnic of the
year
Play and Grow Smart-er Tips
Developmental Learning Tools for 18- to 24-month-olds
Toddler is becoming more excited about independence but is constantly
being reminded of his own limits. So while he insists on doing something
Myself! one moment, the next might find him turning to you for help.
The way he learns what he can do is by getting his hands into everything.
He fiddles with knobs, opens/shuts doors, flips light switches on and off -
its enough to drive you nuts. Toys with interlocking parts (pop-up toys,
matching/sorting toys)/cars with gears that zoom and horns that honk can
create endless opportunities to explore and push his limits while keeping
him away from the light switch.
Now, he learns best from unstructured play, so just make toys available,
and hell take off.
Build your learning Library by choosing developmental learning tools
designed to grow as children grow, that have features and developmental
skill elements appealing to different ages simultaneously all in one toy.
This way, Baby learns developmentally at 6 months old with an item, and at 3
years old, hes ready for different features of the same toy.
Consider the following Developmental Learning Tools options:
SHAPE-SORTING/matching explore square/round, yellow/blue/red, big/big,
little/little, discuss same/its endless! (fine motor, life skills,
creativity, visual, language/vocabulary, thinking/learning)
BOOKS read books with new words/with prominent illustrations that
matches text/with stories that have familiar objects and predictable plots
(fine motor, social/emotional, life skills, creativity, visual, auditory,
language/vocabulary, thinking/learning)
HAMMER and Bang satisfying constructive hitting on a color-matching toy
builds eye-hand coordination (tactile, gross motor, social/emotional,
creativity, visual, auditory, thinking/learning)
BATHTIME activity centers an adventure in math/science:
scooping/pouring/splashing/balancing learning volume, weight, flotation,
logical reasoning (tactile, fine motor life skills, creativity, visual,
language/vocabulary thinking/learning)
MOVING toys big wheeled toys that
crank/rev/beep/steer/roll/ping/choochoo for release of exuberance and
fantasy (gross motor, social/emotional, creativity, visual, auditory,
thinking/learning)
more: MUSICAL/Rhythm toys, FINGER-Paints, JACK-in-the-Box

Personality Plus. . .Who is your Little Person? How to Set Limits with
Empathy
Turn those challenging moments into opportunities to optimize communication
and problem-solving skills. At around 7-9 months old you will notice your
baby starting to show intense desire, protest, frustration, opinions. . .
the emergence of personality. Its easy to enjoy our babies when theyre
cooing and smiling; learn how we, as parents, can avoid the common mistakes,

Recommendation for The Closet Concierge
Brett came to Monikas (Jens list member) house, helped her purge the items
in her closet that were dated or didn't fit, and showed her how to put
together the items that were left into cute, stylish outfits. She also went
over her body type and showed examples of the style of clothes that work
best for her body. Monika is going shopping with her next month to pick out
some new items to give her even more options. With two young kids- 3 years
and 15 months, Monikas style had taken a back seat. Brett showed her she
can be pulled together and look good.

Private (In-Home) Swim Lessons With Barry Shrewsbury
Imagine having an instructor who comes to your home, teaches your child a
life-saving and enriching skill, and leaves you and your child feeling happy
and satisfied. No more driving kids through the heat on overcrowded roads to
attend group swim lessons. Instead, watch from the convenience of your home
while your child is given tailored one-on-one instruction. With Barry,
fearful and hesitant children become enthusiastic and self-confident
swimmers. Competent swimmers enter into advanced swimming skills with self
assurance. You know you have provided one of the finest and most rewarding
experiences of your childs life. Though this instruction and experience is
priceless, it is, in fact, surprisingly affordable. Barry has been teaching
professionally for 19 years with the past 17 years primarily in the Conejo
Valley. Barry has taught over 800 children to swim and his methodology
blends compassion and playfulness with high expectations and a firm
approach. He only teaches private lessons so he can create individualized
programs which address a child's unique personality and needs. As a
testament to the success of his approach, he has families who work with him
year after year. Barrys teaching season runs from June 1st through early
September. He serves the communities of West Hills, Calabasas, Agoura Hills,
Oak Park, West Lake Village, Thousand Oaks and Newbury Park. He works with
children ages 2+ through adults. He generally recommends parents plan on at
least 12 lessons with 2 lessons per week for continuity; a typical lesson
runs about 1/2 hour. His rates are reasonable and can be adjusted for
families with multiple children. You may visit his website at
lucalearnstoswim.com for more information or call him @ 818-632-8358.
