Memorial Day
Memorial Day is officially celebrated on the last Monday during the month of
May. Memorial Day is dedicated to service men and women who gave their lives
for freedom and country. It is also a time to remember loved ones who have
passed away. The roots of Memorial Day go back to 1865 and the end of the
Civil War.  Memorial Day was traditionally held on the 30th of May. In 1971,
Congress changed it to the last Monday in order to afford a three day
holiday weekend. Regardless of the date, all are encouraged to attend a
parade, and visit a cemetery to honor and remember our servicemen. Take time
to remember lost loved ones in whatever way you feel appropriate.  Did you
Know? Memorial Day was first called Decoration Day. It was changed to
Memorial Day in 1882.  Memorial Day also marks the beginning of the
gardening and summer seasons, even though summer will not occur for a few
weeks later. It is usually marked by holding the first family picnic of the

Play and Grow Smart-er Tips
Developmental Learning Tools for 18- to 24-month-olds
•  Toddler is becoming more excited about independence but is constantly
being reminded of his own limits.  So while he insists on doing something
“Myself!” one moment, the next might find him turning to you for help.  
•  The way he learns what he can do is by getting his hands into everything.
He fiddles with knobs, opens/shuts doors, flips light switches on and off -
it’s enough to drive you nuts.  Toys with interlocking parts (pop-up toys,
matching/sorting toys)/cars with gears that zoom and horns that honk can
create endless opportunities to explore and push his limits while keeping
him away from the light switch.
•  Now, he learns best from unstructured play, so just make toys available,
and he’ll take off.
•  Build your “learning Library” by choosing developmental learning tools
designed to “grow” as children grow, that have features and developmental
skill elements appealing to different ages simultaneously all in one toy.
This way, Baby learns developmentally at 6 months old with an item, and at 3
years old, he’s ready for different features of the same toy.
Consider the following Developmental Learning Tools options:
