Play and Grow Smart-er Tips
See last Monday, 3-16-09, for “MATH/LOGIC” developmental skill definition,
CRITICAL WINDOW, and Developmental Learning Tools.
SOME PRO-ACTIVE Parent-Supervised MATH/LOGIC Activities, 6 - 36 months:
• FROM 6 MONTHS, encourage grasping with soft blocks, toys with “handles,”
plastic rings and cloth books.  Use spoons and lids to help Baby experiment
with sounds, fit lids onto containers and stack small objects into large
ones (including objects that purposefully “nest”).  Keep things in
containers that he can dump and fill.  Most of the time you will have to
fill it, but the process of dumping over and over and over is a way he
learns about what he is able to do with objects.
• FROM 9 MONTHS, you stack spools, blocks or plastic cups “up” and knock
them “down.”  Let her help, even if knocking down is more fun.  Keep trying
and explaining your actions.  Eventually she will understand “up” and
“down.”
• FROM 12 MONTHS, zipping and unzipping is great fun – “open....  close....
open....,” “left....  right....  left....” etc.  Let him play in the bath to
learn the fine motor skills of pouring and squeezing with sponges and
plastic (measuring?) cups.  Never leave him alone in the tub.  Count
anything (fingers, toes, socks....) and name everything (dog, cat, plane,
tree, etc).
• FROM 18 MONTHS, Toddler is beginning to understand simple concepts like
space and dimension.  She can probably put together a basic 2-piece puzzle.
Help her build with shoe boxes.  She is figuring out cause and effect – when
she pulls the lever on her jack-in-the-box, a clown pops out.  Put a small
ball on her high chair tray, and teach her how to blow on the ball to make
it move.
• FROM 24 MONTHS, begin supporting him recognizing, matching, naming colors.
Each day, identify colors and ask him to point to something else of the same
color.  Be creative, use your imagination – find everything orange on
Tangerine Tuesday, everything white on White Wednesday, everything blue on
Thirsty Thursday, everything red on Fiery Friday, everything yellow on Sunny
Sunday.  Find your own names for the rest of the days of the week!  (note:
alliteration is good!  It helps us remember, like learning through rhythm.)
• ENCOURAGE sand, mud, clay and water play.  Toddlers enjoy messy play and
learn a great deal from mixing, sifting, pouring, stirring and shaping.
Every time mud squishes through their fingers, brain synapses are being
developed!  If he has stopped putting small things in his mouth, put down a
plastic tablecloth and play with dry rice and beans with scoops and
different sized containers (cups, bowls, pots, plastic containers, oatmeal
cannisters).

Nina is a sweet and beautiful, gangly, too tall, gentle 7 year old German
Shepherd with huge expressive eyes in which her broken heart shows. Nina was
so devoted and gentle when her owner got really ill.  She would lie next to
her and her eyes seemed to well with tears every time the ambulance came to
take her to the hospital.  Every time that someone would come to the door,
she would look beyond them, desperately hoping to see her owner.  And one
day she seemed to realize that her owner was never coming home again.  She
sighed and slowly lowered her head,  And from that day on her heart has been
broken. Pingo, a 7 year old Min Pin, is a mischievous little devil who loves
to cuddle, and who would lie for hours on her owners chest, as though trying
to heal her through his love. They need homes where they will have more
individual love, time, and attention. Both were rescues. The owner was a
psycho therapist who had her practice in her home.  When she had children,
or animal lovers, as clients she would let Nina and Pingo join them in
session to help warm them up.   Both are incredibly gentle and loving with
children.  Nina would lie her head gently in a client's lap if they were
particularly sad.  The owner had a group she ran on Wednesday nights who
loved her dogs: they would laugh as Nina went from person to person,
greeting them.  The owners last wishes were that the dogs remain in her home
until new homes could be found for them. A friend of hers has been staying

Family Puppet Show
Triumvirate Pi Theatre presents two free performances of its family puppet
piece Autumn Leaves on Saturday, March 28 in conjunction with the Getty
Center's full-day interactive Family Festival, which is inspired by the
exhibition Tales in Sprinkled Gold: Japanese Lacquer for European
Collectors. Autumn Leaves is the story of a farmer sending his son to war.
Told with Bunraku puppets, shadow puppets, taiko, and bamboo flute, the
performance is reminiscent of traditional Japanese Bunraku theater but with
a western flair. That same weekend, Tri-Pi Theatre presents the final four
performance of Does He Know?, an experimental performance piece for puppetry
aficionados and "out of the box" theater fans.  Eschewing more mundane forms
of puppet technique, Tri-Pi Theatre melds a one character solo piece with
the visual excitement of shadow play and object puppetry to tell an adult
story about broken relationships and the search for our own path to love.

Women in Need
