Play and Grow Smart-er Tips
THE CRITICAL WINDOW during which the circuits of the brain are being most
heavily wired for Musical development is 3 - 10 years. The more opportunity
children have to experience healthy, positive and nurturing musical
experiences during this critical period, the more efficiently their brains
will work over the long run.
A FEW DEVELOPMENTAL LEARNING TOOLS (toys and other objects) for Musical
development: . musical instruments
. rattles and other toys for making rhythmic sounds . items that create
gentle, rhythmic sounds . play phones
. toys that jingle, squeak, chirp, click, snap, ring . any
technology that plays music . singing toys
Some general MUSIC tidbits:
. FROM NEWBORN, music helps with bonding - dance around with Baby to a jazzy
tune and snuggle in for a love song. Sing songs softly and watch for her
response. Gently, play different types of music, and play music at
different times of day. Think about various styles, rhythms, tempos and
beats. Keep the volume low since an infants hearing can be damaged by loud
music.
. FROM 12 MONTHS, he listens to short thymes and watches fingerplays, like
"Eensy Weensy Spider." He responds rhythmically to music with his whole
body by dancing, swaying or wiggling. He hums or tries to sing and likes
short songs. Since he loves repetition, sing the same songs again and
again. Repeating songs encourages the use of words and memorization. Offer
an oatmeal box drum.
. FROM 30 MONTHS, listen to Toddler's spontaneous singing and repeating
songs or nursery rhymes over and over. Encourage her to reproduce her
rhythms by clapping or by tapping a metal pie pan with a wooden spoon.
. IN THE 3RD YEAR, try some music lessons. Record his singing, and let him
dance to his own music. For more fun, singing and dancing in costume is a
special treat. Substitute his name or a familiar location for names in a
song, like "Old Joey Levinson Had a Farm," or "Old MacDonald Had a Bedroom."
. IN THE 4TH YEAR, experiment with rhythms using hands, feet, voices,
rhythms sticks or other instruments. Can she make a fast rhythm, a slow
one, the rhythm of a horse galloping, a snail crawling?
. IN THE 5TH YEAR, encourage Toddler to jump, hop, skip, dance, tiptoe and
march to slow and quick musical beats.

My Body Belongs To ME
In clear and concise words in children's terms that they can easily
understand and absorb. It is important to teach your children about their
bodies and their private parts at a very young age, especially as we see
sexually abused children coming up younger and younger. It is a life-saving
act of parenting to inform and educate your young children about their
bodies and about who they can trust when someone hurts them. Some parents
are a little uneasy about speaking with their children about this,
especially if you're a new parent, and there is a now book out there to help
you ease into the conversation.

Take great pictures of your kids
A one-day photography workshop- Finally got that cool camera? Splurged for a
fabulous digital SLR? Getting frustrated because you don't really know how
to take advantage of all of its features? Do you just want to learn a few
simple techniques to take amazing pictures of your kids? Join us! This
four-hour session with professional photographer (and mom) Laurie Bailey
will drastically improve the relationship you have with your camera - not to
mention the photos you take with it. Our workshop will cover all the basics
and beyond, including . 1. Fundamentals: How to use your camera and take
advantage of aperture, shutter speed and ISO speed adjustments to get those
really amazing shots. 2. Go toward the light! After all, it is all about
lighting, so we will learn simple tricks to find magical light that
differentiates an artistic photograph from a snapshot. 3. Location,
location, location: After a quick (but tasty!) lunch, we'll leave the safe
confines of the studio and venture out into the real world, applying what
we've learned in true natural-light settings. 4. Tricks of the trade: We've
taken the photos, but we ain't done yet! We will dig into Photoshop (don't
worry - it's really not as scary as you think) and explore some basics in
maximizing the potential of your photographs. But it doesn't end there. As a
bonus, all participants will receive one free month of email consultation
with Laurie, as you can send her your photos and receive tips and feedback
on continuing to get the most out of that camera. Date/Time: Sunday, March
22 - Noon to 4 p.m in Encino (address to be provided upon signup) Cost: $125
