Manners Survival Tips for Summer
BBQ Etiquette
Clean your BBQ before guests arrive and make sure BBQ tools are handy and
work properly. Preheat the grill and allow plenty of time to heat so that
cooking time is efficient. Arm your backyard with insect repellent such as
citronella candles and an electric bug zapper.
Designate one key grill master and then let them do their job. Provide
cleansing wipes for sticky foods and toothpicks to remove kernels of corn
from teeth.
4th of July & Other Summer Parties
RSVP within 48 hours of receiving a party invitation as your host will want
a head count asap. Arrive with a small gift such as a homemade dessert or
decorative item for the home. Wear appropriate swimsuits and cover-ups
especially if young children are around.
Be well-prepared and bring your own sunscreen, towels, toys for the kids,
snacks, etc. Pace yourself on the festive drinks, especially if you are the
designated driver. Refrain from lighting firecrackers in front of small
children. They are dangerous. WATCH your own children!!! Do not rely on
others to ensure their safety.
House hosting
Ask if there are any special food requests or dietary restrictions before
guests arrive. Store lots of fresh fruit, veggies and snacky foods for
quick, easy bites. Make sure accommodations are well-stocked with room
essentials and clean linens. Upon arrival it is especially important to make
your guests feel welcome and comfortable. Arrange fun activities for parents
and children alike. Plan one special evening in for a big celebratory BBQ
with all the trimmings. Organize one special evening out with the gang to a
local restaurant.
Houseguesting
Make sure to bring a gift of appreciation and thanks upon arrival. Offer to
contribute to the purchase of groceries throughout your stay.
Keep your belongings neat and tidy and make your beds each morning. Adjust
to your hosts schedule. If they rise early, so do you! Do not make plans
with other friends while you are a guest in someone's home. Treat your host
to a special night out for dinner. Do not overstay your welcome. It is
always best to leave on a high note. Send a thank you note with photos to
convey your most sincere thanks for a wonderful time.
Staycations
Commit to specific dates for your staycation and request vacation time off
from work. Treat family members with equal respect and patience as if you
were on a traveling vacation. Refrain from using electronic communications
and give your family your full attention. Schedule different activities for
each day such as a hike, a beach day, a day at the museum. Plan dinners out
and use it as an opportunity to display your finest table manners. Don't
forget to take plenty of pictures of all the fun things you did.

SECOND ANNUAL LOS ANGELES "RIDE FOR AUTISM"
The Los Angeles RIDE FOR AUTISM charitable organization, comprised of a 100%
volunteer group, will be hosting their second annual motorcycle ride on
Saturday, August 8, 2009. This exhilarating ride brings together motorcycle
enthusiasts from all walks of life to cruise the streets of Los Angeles and
Orange County to raise awareness and resources for families affected by
autism. For the second year, the ride will kick off at 11 AM at Laidlaw's
Harley Davidson in Baldwin Park and end at Original Mike's in Santa Ana. A
buffet lunch and raffle will be held for all in attendance following the
ride. Dean McDermott, an avid motorcycle racer, actor and star of "Tori and
Dean: Home Sweet Hollywood," currently airing on the Oxygen Network, has
been named Grand Marshall of The Ride for Autism. RIDE FOR AUTISM is making
a difference. In 2008, the first annual motorcycle ride raised over
$50,000. This year, the organization plans to attract over 900 riders while
raising over $100,000. This year's beneficiaries include Autism Speaks,
Autism Society of America. Autism is a complex neurological disorder that
inhibits a person's ability to communicate and develop social relationships.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have called autism a national
public health crisis whose cause and cure remain unknown. The prevalence of
autism has increased tenfold in the past decade, with autism spectrum
disorders affecting one in every 150 children in the United States. Most of
these children require a multitude of resources that may include intensive
care, extensive therapies, and special education. More often than not,
there simply aren't enough resources to go around. For additional
information, including registration information and volunteering, visit

Dental Cleaning and Exam for Kids on Jen's List
I take my 6 1/2 year old and twin 4 year olds to an amazing dental office
and we always have the best experience there.
The office is truly amazing and I cannot stress enough how important it is
to get your children to the dentist early on.
Did you know that dental caries is the most common childhood disease, and
many school days are missed because of dental problems?? The Academy of
Pediatric Dentistry recommends that children have their first dental exam no
later than their first birthday.

Trash for Teaching
Trash for Teaching collects clean and safe cast-off materials from
manufacturing processes (that would otherwise become trash) and repurposes
them as educational resources. With those materials they provide a
comprehensive arts education program in local school districts, which
includes teacher workshops and classroom instruction. The programs feature
the popular Treasure Truck visit making our materials readily available to
teachers and students in the schools, and helping to bridge the gap between
the excess of waste created in manufacturing processes and the lack of
materials in public education.
