Play and Grow Smart-er Tips
Nancy Pyne-Hapke, author of Play and Grow Smart, A Guide Supporting Brain
Development, Birth through Five, has been giving tips to aid your child's
optimum skill development through proactive neuroscience-based activities
every Monday.  These ideas come from scholarly sources to personal
interviews, from the internet to periodicals to books.  
"SOCIAL/EMOTIONAL" developmental skill definition: bonding, building
relationships, appreciating differences, self-esteem, self-expression,
responsibility, self-reliance, resourcefulness. 
THE CRITICAL WINDOWS during which the circuits of the brain are being most
heavily wired for Social/Emotional development are:
.  Social attachment: birth to 18 months       .  STRESS RESPONSE: birth to
about 3 years       .  Empathy, envy: about 2 years - 9 years 
The more opportunity children have for positive social-emotional experiences
during these critical periods, the more efficiently their brains will work
over the long run. 
A FEW DEVELOPMENTAL LEARNING TOOLS (toys and other objects) for

Some Social/Emotional: STRESS RESPONSE tidbits:
. BABY'S EARLY CARE will affect how he develops, learns, copes with and
handles emotions.  Sticking with the same caregiver as much as possible
supports and helps develop "emotional competence."  In a childcare setting,
be aware that Baby may react differently to the childcare giver than to the
parent.  Discuss this possibility.
. BABY DOESN'T UNDERSTAND or enjoy teasing.  For example, when he reaches
for a toy, let him take it instead of snatching it away.  Teasing frustrates
him and may make him cry.
. AVOID becoming consistently angry or frustrated around your child.  One
outburst will not cause harm, but repeated experiences wire the brain's
emotional circuits for dysfunction.  You want to model rational behavior.
. YOUR CHILD is likely to mirror desirable behaviors when she sees the
desirable behaviors of adults around her.  If she sees patience in adults
looking for solutions to problems, she will see that learning is a process
with many steps.
. TELL YOUR CHILD what to do rather than what not to do.  This encourages a
more positive outlook on life.  Tell him how well he's doing when he's doing
what you want him to do.  
. FOR INSTANCE, when he covers his mouth when he coughs, say, "I'm glad you
covered your mouth when you coughed."  Remember to praise the action - "Good
listening!"  "Good job!"  "Good remembering!" - rather than praising the
child.  Children, and sometimes even adults, are LITERAL - if you say "Good
boy!" sometimes and not other times, he'll think he's been a bad boy when
you don't say "Good boy!" even though that's not what you mean!  
. LOUD VOICES/hitting don't model what the child should do.  If you yell to
communicate, your child may also yell to communicate (ever watch the
out-of-control people on the "nanny" tv shows?).  If you use soft warm
touches, he will, too.

unique, multi-sensory, developmental program for babies and children (up to

This Area has experienced a series of Burglaries committed against
residential homes during daytime hours. On one occasion two suspects and
their vehicle were observed on video surveillance. These suspects and their
vehicle may be connected to a series of burglaries being committed in the
West Hills and Woodland Hills neighborhoods. If you observe this vehicle or
its occupants attempt to obtain a license plate and notify LAPD through 911.
Do not attempt to confront or apprehend the suspects.
**The vehicle description is 2000 through 2008 Cadillac, CTS, 4-doors,
tinted windows with a sunroof. The vehicle has chrome rims and distinctive
bright shiny blue paint (possibly a highly polished royal blue).**
