Play and Grow Smart-er Tips
See March 16th posting for "MATH/LOGIC" developmental skill definition,
CRITICAL WINDOW, and Developmental Learning Tools.
SOME PRO-ACTIVE Parent-Supervised MATH/LOGIC Activities for 4-year-olds:
.  EVEN THOUGH Toddler may count 1 to 7 objects out loud (and not always in
the right order), identify numbers 1 to 6 in daily life and count everything
in sight - hopscotch, flowers, steps, cookies, soft drink cans, plastic caps
from soda or bottled water, spoons, etc.
.  USE NUMBERS, colors and shapes in conversation - during a snack, "Here
are 3 round yellow crackers."
.  SORT silverware, socks, rocks, leaves, blocks for size, shape, color,
etc.
.  ENCOURAGE matching - pictures with the same colors, animals with their
appropriate babies, pictures of objects from a magazine with the actual
objects at home.
.  DISCUSS taller and shorter - the table compared to the stove, the bed
compared to the door, Dad compared to Mom, Preschooler compared to her
friend, a dog compared to a horse, a glass compared to a plate, a
doll/stuffed toy compared to a person, etc.
.  MAKE BOOKS!
.  "NUMBERS" book - let Preschooler cut out magazine pictures and glue 1
object on the page with a "1," 
    2 objects on the page with a "2," etc.  Introduce a number sequentially
each week, repeating 1 - 6 over and over.  
    Each page of "1" objects will have different pictures.
.  "ALPHABET" or "LETTERS" book - encourage him to draw letters of the
alphabet and objects which start with the same letter
    (a = apple, b = balloon).  Use lower case letters (because we use lower
case letters more frequently, and more than half of 
    the upper case [capital] letters have a different shape than the lower
case letters).  Introduce a new letter each week and 
    add it to a continuing book.  (Reminder to use "fat" primary
pencils/crayons because they're easier for fine motor coordination.)
.  "WORDS" book - use pictures of things she's familiar with [household
things, things seen at the park/beach/neighborhood]
    and her favorite things she cuts from magazines.  Use "safety/primary"
scissors.  Print in lower case letters 1 or 2 words
    associated with the pictures she chose.
.  "SHAPES" book - focusing on circles, squares and triangles (later on
rectangles, diamonds, ovals, other polygons and 
    different shapes) create a section for objects taken from
newspapers/magazines, a section of child-created shapes, 
    a section of shapes traced from objects: circles from saucers or cups,
squares/rectangles from boxes.

Drum Circle - FREE and sooo much fun for the kids!!!
There can be from 75-100 kids there -- from babies to ten year olds -- and
tons of real drums of every size and shape, from bongos to congas to djembes
and more. There are big baskets of maracas, tambourines, and rhythm sticks
you can use, too. The leader wears a mike so you can hear him and teaches
you a little bit about hand drumming, and bangs out some rhythms on a
cowbell for the kids to copy. Afterwards you can play a giant gong-like drum
used in the Rose Parade, or your child can try playing a real drum kit with
a high hat (makes for some adorable photos). We went this past Sat. and ALL
5 kids had a blast!
