Play and Grow Smart-er Tips
Nancy Pyne-Hapke, author of Play and Grow Smart, A Guide Supporting Brain
Development, Birth through Five, will be giving tips to aid your child's
optimum skill development through proactive activities. These ideas come
from scholarly sources to personal interviews, from the internet to
periodicals to books.
The Developmental skill definition of SOCIAL/EMOTIONAL and an overview of
developmental learning tools: Social/Emotional Skills are: bonding,
self-esteem, building relationships, appreciating differences, cooperation,
self-expression, responsibility, self-reliance and resourcefulness. ALMOST
immediately for Baby, the importance of bonding and building relationships
with others is essential to form an understading of the world around and
within. Emotional expression and awareness can be better understood once
stable and healthy relationships are established. Social/emotional
attributes can be enhanced with toys (learning tools) that promote proper
and fulfilling modes of expression and interaction. For a baby, learning
social skills might mean just bonding to those who love them; for an older
child, it might mean joining a team or having a sleepover. CHILDREN,
particularly in the preschool years, become more social and more
inquisitive. They are beginning to move out into the world, gaining a sense
of others and developing self-confidence.
EMOTIONAL competence -- self-motivation and the abilities to stick to a
task, to understand others, to build trusting relationships, to cope with
stress, and to manage strong feelings -- is developed by hugs rather than
stern words, by patience and warmth, by mirroring appropriate modeling and
by success experiences.SOME DEVELOPMENTAL LEARNING TOOLS (toys and other
objects) for Social/Emotional Skill Development: stuffed animals objects
involving photos keepsake products dolls puppets play figures
costumes art materials cars and airplanes games involving 2 or more
players musical instruments household/realistic toys.
THE CRITICAL WINDOWS during which the circuits of the brain are being most
heavily wired for Social/Emotional development are as follows: SOCIAL
ATTACHMENT: birth to 18 months, STRESS RESPONSE: birth to about 3 years,
EMPATHY, ENVY: about 2 years through 9 years. The more opportunity children
have to experience healthy, positive and nurturing social/emotional
activities during these critical periods, the more efficiently their brains
will work over the long run. SOCIAL ATTACHMENT - MOTHER is Babys first
playmate and favorite person. A secure attachment is created by the loving
tone of Mothers voice, the positive set of her mouth, the easy pace of her
breathing, the warm feel of her skin, the nurturing look in her eye, the
gentle touch of her hand. This crucial parent-child bond of supportive
interactions creates building blocks toward stong psychological and
neurological development. Remember to give Dad equal time! TAKE care of
Babys needs immediately respond to his cries, feed him when hes hungry
and change his diaper when hes dirty. This way you help him trust, feel
safe and be confident. As he gets older, feeling secure encourages him to
try new things. Be consistent so he knows what to expect. ABOUT hugging and
cuddling - HUGGING and changing her position once in a while, hold Baby
often, cuddling and rocking her. Smile and talk to her in a soothing way
while you sing, dance, rock, read or talk. Always touch, hold and move
gently. HOLD her when she needs to be held. Dont be afraid this will
spoil her when you care for and respond to her, she will likely be less
demanding during the toddler years. BEING held and cuddled frequently is
extremely important in the development of her sense of self-worth and
security. Holding and cuddling her is also a great stress release for an
adult! TELL him how special he is. MUSIC helps with bonding dance around
with Baby to a jazzy tune and snuggle in for a love song.
HOLD him when you introduce him to strangers, but encourage him to reach out
and interact with them so he begins to feel comfortable with meeting new
people. IF you are holding something interesting keys or a shiny toy
share it with Baby so he understands that interesting items are meant to be
shared. This will help him prepare for the time when he is expected to
share his own things. Next week Social/Emotional: Stress response . Any

Lost dog found in Balboa Park in Encino
"Sunday a little white male dog, possible Terrier/Pekingese mix found us in
the park. He has been neutered, wearing a black leather collar no tags and
no micro chip. We took him to the east valley animal shelter. He is very
sweet, I've made found signs and should have them up this weekend. I gave
the shelter my number if he is not claimed or adopted. His ID # is A0991202.
My vet and the shelter thinks he is about 3 years old. Great with other
dogs, cats and kids." If anyone thinks they might know the owner they can
