Play and Grow Smart-er Tips
See Jen's List Archive (Oct. 27) for developmental skills covered/age
increments, developmental definition and developmental Learning Tools
relating to "SOCIAL/EMOTIONAL," Emotional Competence and Critical Windows of
Learning.
Pt. 2.... STRESS RESPONSE: Critical Window: birth to about 3 years
FEELING IMPORTANT fosters "emotional competence" (see above). Your child
feels important when you look at and respond directly to her, listening to
what she has to say, and answering her questions.
KNOWING that the normal stresses of a busy home are always poking at how we
pay attention to (fostering the emotional competence of) our children, the
daily balancing act is always challenging for all of us!
MANY TIMES a tantrum is a demonstrable cry for attention. If your child has a
tantrum, keep calm. You can say, "I know you feel really angry when that
happens." Don't let him have what he wants just because he's screaming.
Put him in a safe place where he can't hurt himself. (When you're in a
public place like a mall or market, if at all possible, take him to an
enclosed place like the car.) Let him calm down, and then hug and comfort
him. (Spanking and yelling only makes him angrier. He will calm down on
his own.) When he's quiet, help him change his attention to an activity
that he likes. In time and with supportive modeling, he will learn other
ways to deal with his anger.
STAY WITH your child when someone new is around. Encourage strangers to
approach slowly. Introduce the stranger by name, and let your child explore
someone new in the safety of your presence.
KEEP DANGEROUS OBJECTS out of your child's reach and safe ones within it -
this minimizes running around saying "NO" every time he touches something
that could harm him.
SINCE THERE IS emotional security in routines, develop and keep rituals and
daily routines, like singing softly while putting her down for a nap, and a
bath followed by a book or other quiet activity at bedtime.
NEAR 3 YEARS, if he throws a doll at his sister because he wants to play
with her game, Toddler needs to know why he shouldn't throw it - he is
learning to be "civilized." He also needs to know he can't have what he
wants all the time. Say, "Please don't throw the doll. It could hurt
someone. You could use blocks to make a house for the doll. Later you can
play the game when your sister finishes."

Allie rescued a 3 week old baby kitten & can't keep him
He is at the East Valley Animal Shelter & hoping that someone would adopt
him. They can't put him up for adoption until he is 8 weeks old and he
needs a foster parent until then. They took him for the night but she is
desperately trying to find someone who can foster him for 4 weeks until they
can take him. If he does not find a foster home, they will put him to sleep
in a few days. He is eating wet food on his own and is a really cute cat.
