A hard lesson learned...
How many times have you been told, do not put outgoing mail in your own mailbox to mail? I think I have been told it 100 times, esp. because my identity has been stolen twice. But, I guess by my latest stroke of bad luck, I did not learn my lesson. We had a great weekend...the weather cooperated, the kids had fun, all was good...until I came home i to a message from Old Navy Credit Dept. saying my acct is overdue. Of course i paid my bill....or so i thought. My check to Old Navy cleared, but when i looked closer at the amount on the B of A website, it was not for the $76.10 that I wrote it for, it was for $1976.10. i guess someone stole it from my outgoing mail, altered the check and then cashed it. I can see the check scan online and it has clearly been changed. i have been besides myself, sick to my stomach...i kinda thought our acct. was off, but honestly, just thought b/w summer camps for the 3 kids, school, etc...we just had extra expenses this month. i have to go to B of A now and deal with their fraud dept. Just how I wanted to start off my week...so...to protect yourself...dont even try it...not worth the risk :O(

"Undocumented and Underserved"... Immigrant's Rights and Realities
National Council of Jewish Women Los Angeles in conjunction with our Women Helping Women Services, Advocacy and the Center for Pacific Asian Families have partnered to present a free community event that will bring to light how undocumented victims of domestic violence can learn to identify barriers and service gaps that put them and their children at risk.
What is the effect of the current political climate on services for undocumented immigrant families? Does a victim of domestic violence who is undocumented have access to the criminal justice system or social services for her and her children?
Do service barriers for undocumented immigrants have a ripple affect on community violence, public health or education?
What barriers to services and protections affect not only the women, but also their children and the community at large? What rights and services ARE available?

First Tuesday
The concept of bringing extraordinary women together began in 1996, when Missy Lavender (now Co-founder Of the Women's Health Foundation) launched a "First Tuesday" monthly breakfast gathering for a small groupof women at a Chicago Health Club. In 1998, Marcy
Cole took over the coordination in Chicago and transitioned the gatherings into an evening venue. The primary purpose has always been to create and continuously grow a vibrant and mutually supportive sense of "community" amongst a group of diverse, like-minded and conscious women. Robin Berman began a Los Angeles Chapter in 2003. Marcy Cole moved to L.A. in the fall of 2004 and once again resumed coordination, while passing the baton to Karrin Algas in Chicago. Rae Hipolito, M.S., MFT is now coordinating a South Bay women’s
group in Southern California called “Divine Sisterhood” modeled after “First Tuesday” and meeting the 2nd Tuesday of every month; committed to staying integrated and connected with “First Tuesday LA”. There are now close to 400 women in Chicago and nearly 250 women in LA, who are either peripherally affiliated or actively involved with our amazing community of magnificent women. Various ladies in the group host our monthly gatherings, usually held on the first Tuesday of the month. They have a different agenda each time they meet, drawing on subjects spanning mind/body/and spirit. The hostess typically caters the meal and the women attending contribute. They also keep the connection and communications flowing through the Yahoo network, where the ladies can send in announcements, questions and requests via the yahoo group e-mail system. One "First Tuesday" gal recently shared, "It's the transparency and interactivity that makes this kind of message/communication system so powerful, and invaluable." Do NOT flush KANDOO "flushable" wipes made by Pampers! Eric & Elisa Stearns (es2stearns at comcast.net) just had $4000 worth of damage due to a plumbing back-up, because of these wipes. When the plumber "snaked" their pipes, he brought out to show them a HUGE clump of KANDOO wipes. He said he sees this problem alot and that "flushable" wipes are a gimick.

Nicole Parker, an 8-year-old Tarzana, California girl, disappeared on November 20, 1993, while playing with a softball and glove outside her father's Woodland Hills apartment. Her body was discovered stuffed in a suitcase in the bedroom closet of a neighbor's apartment across the courtyard. Nicole's killer, age 23, was found guilty of sexually molesting and murdering Nicole and was sentenced to death by a Van Nuys Jury. He now awaits his sentence at San Quentin Prison. The Nicole Parker Foundation for Children was established in Nicole's memory and is dedicated to helping children. Proceeds raised are used to benefit several organizations including the Audrey Hepburn CARES Team at Childrens Hospital Los Angeles. The Audrey Hepburn CARES Team was established in response to a growing need to provide comprehensive, high-quality child abuse evaluations and mental health treatment in a safe and caring "child friendly" environment. The Team provides the consultation necessary to help ensure these children receive the full protection of the justice system, and offers the mental health services necessary for the fullest recovery of the children and their families. The Nicole Parker Foundation is an all-volunteer organization established in 1994. This Foundation's primary fund raisers are a yearly Golf Tournament and Fundraiser in the Spring and our Fifth Annual Comedy Event at The Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza - Kavli Theater.

If you did not nominate YOUR mom, then consider nominating this mom
Selma has been entered in the "America's favorite mom" contest. She is a survivor. She came to this country 20 years ago with all of her kids in tow, leaving behind the life she knew, her lifelong friends and family, and worked her tush off to provide for a great life, and at the same time, always being there for her kids for everything they needed. She had a hard childhood, but that only made her give her own daughters the most loving home she could. Even though she is a healthy, fit, happy woman, in September 2006 she suffered a heart attack while celebrating her 35th wedding anniversary. In December she had open heart surgery, and the surgery failed. She could barely stand, she could barely hold herself up long enough to hold her beloved granddaughters. After two more surgeries, lots of therapy and treatments she is finally starting to be the old "Abu" (as the grandkids call her). She is the creative and definitely hands on half of the business, Kiss Me Moon, she is a wonderful wife, friend, grandma, sister, and most of all, mom there is. Her kids love her with all their hearts and they definitely think she is the best. They are asking people to read her story and vote (if they haven't nominated their own mom, of course)

RANDOM OTHER:
Finally, if you are ever looking for fun gifts for your kids, visit the Toys Toys Toys shop on Riverside in Sherman Oaks (I think it is a few blocks east of Woodman) They have real-working instruments for kids at great prices. (And they're fun for grown-ups, too =)
