Do you have experience working with/against the medical field?
This is a letter from a dear friend of mine...read on:
Sam has a little girlfriend that he is quite fond of named Olivia that he met at daycare. I became friends with her mom earlier this year and we've spent quite a bit of time together at parks and other kid-friendly places! The two of them drive me and Trista crazy by always calling out each other's names when they are not together - he calls her 'E' and she says "see Sam?". So Trista and I scramble to get together thinking they are going through withdrawals from not seeing each other in a few days and of course they spend the entire time together ignoring each other or stealing toys from each other! The amazing thing about Olivia is that she became very sick in January but fortunately fully recovered. Within 12 hours of getting a round of vaccines, she starting having seizures and after a few weeks in the hospital and continuing to seize multiple times a day, she came home and started making a slow recovery. The doctors felt she had a rare allergic reaction to Pertussin, the "P" in the DPT vaccine. By April Olivia was fully recovered and this seemed like a distant nightmare. She received a clean bill of health from not only her doctor at Kaiser, but also a neurologist at Stanford. The decision was made to wean Olivia from the anti-seizure medication she was still on. Unfortunately, within 3 weeks of being completely off the medication, she had a relapse in May and the seizures started again. While the episode is very similar to the first one, this time around it has been much more severe (30+ seizures a day for 2 ½ weeks), she is not able to walk, talk, eat by herself and she is not responding to voice, persons or music. After having her blood work done a few weeks ago, it was discovered that one of the medications that the doctor had increased the previous week was at toxic levels and she was basically overdosing. Once the medication was stopped, she improved slightly but has not made any significant progress in the last few weeks, and may possibly be regressing. Her neurologist is at a loss for why this has happened, why she isn't recovering as she did the previous time and what the next steps should be. Olivia's parents, Trista and Yanni, can't accept that there is nothing that can be done and that they may possibly never know what caused this or if their daughter will recover 100%. They are at a loss for what they can or should do, what their rights are and how the medical field works. Kaiser told them that a second opinion is allowed ONE time for an illness but anything above and beyond that is the family's financial obligation. Unfortunately Kaiser does not classify this episode as a new occurrence so they can't get a second opinion unless they pay for it (Stanford would have cost $15k if they had to pay). I am sending this sad story to you in hopes that you may have experience working with/against the medical field, or you know someone within the medical field that can provide some advice or recommendations. Trista asked me to look into patient advocacy groups and whatever else I can find out that may help them. They need someone who can help them get through the red tape that is preventing them from getting Olivia the help that she needs. As sad as it is, the end result may be that Olivia will not recover from this like she did the first time, but I know if it were Sam that this was happening to, I would move heaven and earth to make sure I did everything possible to get him the proper care and in front of every specialist I could find to make sure he was getting the proper treatment. If there is anything you can do or any advice or recommendations you have, please let me know. Otherwise, please keep Olivia and her family in your thoughts and prayers. Please call Patti Sousa at 707.452.2869
