Fri Jun 13 10:05:38 EDT 2008

We survived our 1st week with 5 boys, ages 5 and under. Finally, they sleep at the same time!

Asides from our oldest son fracturing his heal yesterday and me spending 3 1/2 hours in the orthopedist office,

the week was great! The babies went from 4/10 to 5/2 & 4/14 to 5/8 - they are all good boys & I know it will only get better!

Have a wonderful weekend everyone and Happy Fathers Day to all the dads out there.
~Jen

Hope In Sight Annual Gala
Years ago, local children and adults with severely impaired vision had no help to use their limited vision in order to live, work and play. The nonprofit Center for the Partially Sighted opened it’s doors 30 years ago to help these people live full and independent lives. Each year the Center recognizes accomplished individuals with their Vision Award, presented at their Hope In Sight Gala. Past recipients include Lucille Ball, Ella Fitzgerald, Gene Kelly, Sammy Davis, Jr., and last year’s honoree, Betty White. Very dear friends of mine, Louis and Michelle Posen have been chosen as recipients of the Vision Award this year, which will be presented at the Hope In Sight Gala on September 21, 2008. Vision-related issues are important to both them. They have been involved with the Center for many years, and have seen first-hand how vitally important their programs are to helping people cope with this seismic transition in their lives. They invite you to join them in supporting the crucial work the Center does by donating an item to the center for the live auction during the annual gala. Your auction donation will be acknowledged in the gala dinner program and auction posting, in their newsletter, and on their website. The Center’s annual Hope In Sight Gala raises funds to insures that everyone can get the care they need when their vision fails. Recently they opened additional sites in Tarzana, Torrance and San Luis Obispo to meet the ever-increasing demand from children born with optical albinism, people diagnosed with retinitis pigmentosa or diabetes-related vision loss, and older adults losing central vision to macular degeneration. Less than 8% of the Center’s budget comes directly from their clients, and no one is turned away because they cannot afford to pay. In addition, many services such as in-home training in daily living tasks, psychological counseling, and referrals to helpful community resources are provided free or on a sliding scale. The Center relies on the generous donations from individuals and foundations help fund the majority of their programs. With your generous assistance, the Center will be able to continue to make a significant difference in the lives of the thousands of local individuals who so desperately need their help. Your tax-deductible gift will have a significant impact in changing lives right here in Southern California. To make a donation or more information, please email mishmph at earthlink.net

Plaza Urgent Care
2601 W. Alameda Suite 111 in Burbank
818.295.5920
Open 7 days a week on walk-in basis - M-F: 12pm-9Pm/Sat and Sun: 10am-5pm
They are directly across from St. Joseph and cost substanitally less than what the ER would have been. FYI, our insurance office was closed so they couldn't verify our benefits, so we ended up paying cash, and it was less than $100!!!! Luckily, I saw it when I was at my doctor's office (it's in the same building) and knew exactly where to take him when the accident happened. It's not specifically pediatrics like the one on Balboa, but it was a great ER alternative since it happened at 6:30PM and our MD office was closed. I can't stress enough how important it is to know these things BEFORE something happens. It really could have been a lot worse had we panicked and not known where to get immediate medical attention.
There is also one in Studio City - 12660 Riverside Drive Suite 110

Hours:M-F: 8AM-8PM/Sat and Sun: 9AM-5PM

New song with a patriotic feeling
If anyone is looking for a song (from a child's perspective) with a "support our troops" message along with some underlying "sensitivities to war," "Daddy's Picture (Is On The wall)" is perfect for a "stand alone song." The song is also a good fit for a movie which has some aspects dealing with the mid-east situation or any war situation for that matter. If interested, please contact: Jerry Rosenstein at jrosenstein at PioneerMagnetics.com or 310-476-4599 for more info.

This is the story of Avital:
Avital, a 39 years old divorced mother of three young children, discovered two years ago that she has a rare and difficult to treat form of cancer. She lives in Melbourne, Australia and the doctors there were at a loss and did not give her any solution or hope. After worldwide research, Avital and her family found a doctor who suggested a promising treatment. Dr. Robert Nagournay treats cancer with a cutting edge technology that combines chemotherapy and radiation, and is especially fit for rare forms of cancer. Dr. Nagournay works out of Long Beach Memorial hospital in Long Beach, California. About a year and a half ago Avital came to Los Angeles with her sister for surgery and treatment that lasted three and a half months. It was financed by her family, friends and donations from the Jewish community of Melbourne. Avital was a teacher at the Jewish day school in Melbourne for many years until she got sick. The medical expenses for that period were over $70,000, but it was a success and the cancer disappeared. About a months ago, after six months of health and happiness, the disease returned to a different part of her body. Reluctantly, Avital left her children again and flew to LA last week for treatment. On Monday, May 19th, she was hospitalized for surgery, during which the doctors will attempt to remove as much of the tumor as possible along with the organs close to it. After three days of hospitalization and some rest, she will start treatment for about a month and a half. Since Avital is not a US resident, she does not have medical insurance to cover the necessary treatments. Additionally, in the time that has passed since she was here, the rates increased. For example, her surgery cost $25,000 in 2007 and is now going to be $35,000. That price does not include doctors' fees. The Bikur Hollim organization is generally providing Avital and her brother with an apartment near the hospital for the duration of their stay. Local friends have rented them a car. The Jewish community in Melbourne had collected about $30,000, but the cost of treatment is going to be much higher, and if sufficient funds are not collected - Avital will not be able to receive all the medically necessary treatments. Our goal is to collect 50,000 dollars. Any form of help will be received with endless gratitude and appreciation. Any amount will help in Avital's healing and recovery, and will allow her to go back home to her children. A bank account was opened in her name: Avital Chabat at Bank of America, El Camino Branch, 23347 Mulholland Drive, Woodland Hills, CA 91364

Sign Shine
What if your baby could tell you exactly what she’s thinking? What if she could tell you that she’s wet or hungry? Wouldn’t it be wonderful to understand your baby’s needs and for your baby to be understood? It’s possible, today, right now, with Baby Sign Language. Babies pay attention to and understand much of what’s being said to them. They try very hard to make themselves understood, but it takes them a long time to coordinate and control the fine muscles involved with speech. They gurgle and grunt and when they get frustrated, they cry. But here’s something amazing: while speech is difficult, hand movements are easy, even for tiny babies. Those little fingers easily fold and unfold, grasp and wave, clench and waggle. SignShine’s Baby Sign Language classes help your baby or toddler use those natural hand movements to express words -- ball, mommy, airplane -- and even concepts -- hungry, help, more, and others. They use age-appropriate books, games, rhymes and songs to teach American Sign Language, not made-up signs. You and your baby will quickly learn and begin using a handful of simple, practical signs. Uniquely at SignShine, you will also learn valuable parenting skills you can use every day as you nurture your baby’s development. Using Baby Sign Language, you will build a stronger parent-child bond because your pre-verbal child will feel understood and valued. They encourage you and baby to sign with siblings, grandparents, and babysitters. We also offer workshops specially designed for caregivers, teachers, and therapists. Check out the SignShine classes, an Introductory Workshop, a day of signing at the L.A. Zoo, or a Mommy and Me class. There’s something for everyone! http://www.signshine.com/index.php
