Over the weekend, a 6 year old girl nearly drowned at a community center swimming pool in the SFV. There were a lot of adults around and it is still unclear how the incident occurred, however the point is that this horrible incident can happen to ANYONE. No matter how old your kids may be, please learn cpr and please keep an expectation that someone in the pool could be in trouble at any moment. Don't get comfortable or complacent and don't assume at parties that someone's watching the pool. This is when most of these accidents happen, when everyone's around. The little girl is doing better and better each hour and is able to respond to both physical and verbal stimuli. When her sedation is diminished she tries to sit up, is able to squeeze her parents' hands and can respond to questions by nodding. 2 things - 1) please pray for her and her recovery. 2) PLEASE sign up for a CPR course this week! It took paramedics a while to get to the child. Both an adult at the pool and a doctor who happened to live across from the pool were there attending to the little girl until the medics arrived. The sad reality is that you CANNOT depend on 911. In a drowning or choking, every second counts. Arm yourself with as much skill and knowledge as you can. And make sure to not only renew every year, but once a month review what to do in choking/drowning situations in a first aid book. There is a new CPR method and thank goodness the doctor knew it. She was not responding and when he took over, her heart started beating again and she started breathing.
Hug your children and--please, please keep praying for this little girl.
