Tips from a volunteer crew chief captain at the Wildlife Waystation
How to co-exist with our canine coyotes:
1)  Make yourself look as large as possible by waving your arms, opening your jacket, etc.  They will rarely attack something larger than themselves unless they are in a pack and pretty desperate.
2)  Coyotes, like other wild animals, are constantly on the lookout for an easy food source.  Don't be one.  Never leave food outside for your dogs or other pets that would encourage a coyote to enter your property.
3)  Never leave toddlers unattended.  Although it is very rare for a coyote to attack a human, it has happened.
4)  Coyotes become more aggressive when their natural food sources are depleted or greatly reduced.  Judging by the proliferation of baby bunnies and rats and mole holes I've seen on our greenbelt, I think their normal food supply is abundant.  
5)  If coyotes are entering your property by jumping fences or going around them and you're desperate to keep them out, here's one foolproof method.  Call the Wildlife Waystation or another big cat rescue station.  Ask them if they have any tiger or lion urine available.  Spread it around your property line.  The coyotes may not know what they're smelling, but they know they don't want a piece of it. 
6)  Finally, if you have tried to chase a coyote away and it is acting oddly or not behaving like a normal coyote should, it may be diseased.  Take note of the location and any markings which may help identify the specific animal to the Animal Control unit.

SUMMER 'FIT'CAMP FOR WOMEN ONLY
