I just wanted to let everyone know that starting this weekend, there will no longer be "Jenslist" on Saturday and Sunday. The daily newsletters will, of course, continue Monday-Friday. Moving into my 19th week on this pregnancy journey, I find myself more and more exhausted! Have a terrific weekend!

"Raising Readers: How Parents Can Nurture Children to Read on Their Own"
Don't miss this last chance to hear Jim speak! Reading aloud is the single most important activity contributing to your child's eventual success in reading, no matter their age. Jim Trelease, author of The Read- Aloud Handbook, has been the most sought after speaker on this topic for over thirty years. Jim is retiring from the lecture circuit at the end of this month. This will be our last opportunity to have this incredible speaker share his special message with Parent Talk.
You can order tickets by calling Horizon Hills (805)492-8837 ext. 4033 - $15 presale, $20 at the door.
>From Jim Trelease (The Read-Aloud Handbook):
Reading aloud to a child serves as a spark for reading interest, just the way a TV commercial whets children's appetites for products. By reading aloud, you advertise the pleasure of reading instead of the work that children too often associate with reading. The read-aloud experience also builds listening comprehension, the essential ingredient for reading comprehension. If a child has never heard the word, he's unlike to say the word. And if you've neither heard it nor said it, it's going to be very difficult to read and write the word. The other essential is how much time the child spends reading silently. Reading is a skill very much like swimming. Once you've learned the basics, the only way to get better at it is to DO it - to jump in the water and swim or jump into print and read. And the more you do it, the better you get at it; the better you get at it, the more you like it; and the more you like it, the more you do it; etc. But you cannot get better at it if you do not do it. Jim shares with you the factors he has found in the lives of those students who read the best: the things their parents had in the home, how the parent of the world's preeminent pediatric brain surgeon (from inner-city Detroit) controlled her family's TV viewing, which books to read aloud to which ages, and a special message for a sports-obessed Dads (hint: it doesn't do any good to have "49er" ON your head if you've got zero IN your head). The best part of the message is its simplicity. You don't need a set of encyclopedias or a computer in the home, or even a college diploma. All you need is 15 minutes a day, a library card, and the willingness to give your child a gift that will last longer than anything you could purchase in a shopping mall. One extra dividend: if you can get through my program without laughing out loud at least ten times, it's a sure sign your sense of humor is badly damaged.

On Monday, February 18, 2008 at the annual Gala, Conejo Jewish Day School will be celebrating the 8th year of educating Southern California's modern-day Jewish children using the richness and vibrancy of the Torah - a 3,000 year old tradition. Beyond an excellent secular education, the children learn to cherish goodness for its own sake and to treat their fellow person with acceptance, compassion and respect. Our children's beliefs are being influenced. They believe in a world where, ultimately, goodness and compassion will prevail through action.
