De Beers overpriced the diamond market
De Beers is the largest supplier of rough diamonds in the world. Beginning in 2001, Plaintiffs in several states filed lawsuits against De Beers in state and federal courts alleging that De Beers unlawfully monopolized the supply of diamonds, conspired to fix, raise, and control diamond prices, and issued false and misleading advertising. De Beers denies it violated the law or did anything wrong. The Settlement Agreement provides that $22.5 Million be distributed to the Direct Purchaser Class, and that $272.5 Million will be distributed to the Indirect Purchaser Class. De Beers also agrees to refrain from engaging in certain conduct that violates federal and state antitrust laws and submit to the jurisdiction of the Court to enforce the Settlement. You can get a refund on any diamonds purchased since 1997. You don't need to send in your receipts but I still happen to have mine for 2 rings that I have bought in the past few years. A ring costing $2,000 could get you back around $600. You can go online at www.diamondsclassaction.com. You must submit your claim by May 19, 2008 in order to get a refund.

Fifty Plus Fitness
Lori P. Michiel, NASM, CPT - Fitness Coaching by Phone
A Fun and Easy Way to Get Fit That Fits Into Your Schedule! Are you someone who is having a tough time making a commitment, getting started, or getting results from your current exercise program? Fitness by Phone Coaching (FBPC) could be your answer. FBPC is a valuable way of keeping us accountable to exercise. It is easy to follow an exercise plan and commitment at first, but when no one is holding you accountable, commitment quickly fades. That is why the majority of new gym memberships drop off after the first 30 to 90 days. Ground-breaking research supports that FBPC successfully addresses why phone coaching works. Researchers at Stanford University have been studying phone-based exercise counseling for over 24 years. Their research confirms an extremely high exercise adherence/compliance of 85% compared with traditional personal training of 10-25%. Even after six months, 90% of the subjects were still committed to FBPC. So, this is not new! With FBPC you have access to your coach seven days a week by phone or email; one way to become less dependent on a trainer's physical presence while taking charge of your own exercise program. No need to worry about cancelling appointments with your trainer because you can conveniently get "coaching" from the comfort of your home, office or hotel. And, finally the cost is considerably lower than traditional training. If you want to empower yourself to do more - call Lori P. Michiel, NASM, CPT fitness expert specializing in active adults and seniors. Lori is passionate about her work, creating individualized weight-loss programs and teaching fun ways to tone and shape the body. She is available, especially for the busy executive as a Fitness by Phone® Coach, Boot-ish Camp, Seniorsize Fitness, Lectures and more. Contact her at 818-620-1442 or visit her at www.fiftyplusfitness.biz.

CELEBRITY BABY GADGETS: An $1,800 Hummer wagon, lice-repellant shampoo and a chocolate facial were among the unique children's items featured at the Century Plaza Hotel, where celebrity parents hunted the Baby Boom Room for new goodies for their babies and kids. Evan Handler ("Californication," "Sex & the City") was there with wife and baby Sofia in tow; Carnie Wilson riffed about 3-year-old daughter Lola's obsession with Strawberry Shortcake while Paris Hilton's relative Kyle Richards, pregnant with child No. 4, said she wanted to try on baby carriers. Check Momspace for more photos and details on the products.
WHAT WE PAY BABY SITTERS: Last week, we asked readers how much they pay their baby sitter. The results surprise me: Los Angeles parents seem willing to shell out for good child care. Of 51 respondents to date, 21 pay above $16 an hour. Ten others pay $14 to $16, and eight said they plunk down $11 to $13 an hour. Six people pay $8 to $10 an hour, and five people hand their baby sitter more than $20. I think I'm in the wrong business.
CHILDCARE IS BIG BIZ: It turns out the care and education of preschool children is big business, employing more than 65,000 people and generating nearly $2 billion annually for the local economy, says a new study. Early childhood education is expected to continue as an employment force through at least 2016. "That means jobs and the question becomes how do we train these people and how do
we set things up?" says Randi Wolfe, director of work force development at the publicly funded Los Angeles Universal Preschool. For more on this study, see www.insidesocal.com/momspace.
VID KIDS: Of 69 video games marketed as "educational," just two feature traditional educational content like literacy, math and science, according to a December study by the Joan Ganz Cooney Center, named for the co-creator of "Sesame Street." The report, "D is for Digital," calls for the development of more content that is truly educational. Other findings: children are starting to use electronic gadgets at age 6.7, compared with age 8.1 in 2005. They also are multitasking, packing 8 hours of media consumption into 6 hours. See the complete study: www.joanganzcooneycenter.org/pdf/DisforDigital.pdf.
