Nanny/Cleaning/Sitter Leads
Friday Night and Weekend Nanny Available in Culver City area: My baby's nanny, Maria, is looking for some weekend babysitting jobs to make extra money. She is currently taking care of my 6 month old baby Monday through Friday. She is great, has a lot of nanny experience and really enjoys working with children! She speaks Spanish and understands some English. I highly recommend her and would be more than happy to provide more details regarding her experience. If interested call me, Veronica @213-400-8503. My husband and I are also thinking about sharing our nanny 2 or 3 days a week in our home with another child close to the same age as our 6 month old. We live in Los Angeles, Palms area, close to Culver City.
AND
A real treasure, with our family for 15 years; Very loving and beyond trustworthy, she's part of why our son is the amazing person he is! She speaks Spanish and English, has a car, is legal, and has great references. Hayde engages her in creative, developmental activities, like dress-up, puppets, games, puzzles and reading. Hayde also makes healthy meals and snacks, helps keep her room and toys tidy and her clothes clean. She is looking full time work, M-F in the Valley (Tarzana to Studio City preferred). She is also available weekend nights. You may contact Hayde directly on her cell at 818-359-8321 or her email at aidealcazar at yahoo.com. AND
Our nanny's mother is seeking a full-time job as a nanny. She has several years (I think 10 or more) experience as a nanny and comes with references. I know 2 of her daughters who are both excellent nannies, so they must have learned it somewhere! She speaks English, drives, is legal, has a car, etc. For more information, please email stef at childspeak.net She will work valley, city, santa monica, wherever.
AND
Passing along this lead - Due to the Writer's Strike we will no longer be able to keep our cleaning lady. Another twin mom and I have been sharing her and she is absolutely wonderful. She is available on Mon, Wed and Friday's. She will clean without chemicals if you would like her to which is what both of us have her do) or if you want her to she will use you regular cleaners. She charges $70 per day for 7 hours. Please email me if you are interested and I am sure Denise will give her a glowing recommendation as well. Thank you, Becky at beccal4now at aol.com
Beyond shelter - Move-In Baskets for Homeless Families
Beyond Shelter is a non profit organization founded in 1988 in response to the increasing crisis of family homelessness in Los Angeles. Through this program, homeless families are assisted in moving out of shelters and into permanent housing. Once back in housing, families receive help with jobs, child care and other social services to start rebuilding their lives. Since inception, 3,400 homeless families have moved back into permanent housing, with a 90% success rate. They are currently working with Beyond Shelter to put together move-in baskets for 50 homeless families that consist of items such as cookware, dishes, cutlery, towels, sheets, pillows and blankets. The items or money that you donate will go towards building these move-in baskets for these families as most of them have nothing except for the clothes on their back upon moving into permanent housing. In addition, it can be used as deductions on your tax returns. Unfortunately, none of the funding that Beyond Shelter receives covers these types of items that are essential for these families. They rely completely on the generosity of both donors and volunteers in our community.
The following is the list of items that are needed:
Kitchen Baskets (items must be new)
Kitchen towels (4-6)
Plates, dishes, bowls for 6 people
Drinking glasses for six people (can be plastic)
Cookware - a box set of pots and pans (usually 3 pots and 3 pans)
Set of flatware for six people
Cooking utensils - spatulas and mixing spoons
2 or 3 mixing bowls
2 or 3 baking pans
Linen Baskets (items must be new)
1. 2 sets of full sheets, 4 sets of single sheets (could sub 1 set of full with queen) *
2. 6 blankets (not comforters) *
3. 6 pillows
4. Towels - 6 shower, 6 hand, 6 washcloths
5. 2 bathmats
Everyone's efforts together will help end poverty one family at a time. If you have any questions or desire further information, please contact (contact information removed per request)

Barbara Correa's MOMSPACE
www.insidesocal.com/momspace/ column appears every Thursday in the Daily News.
DROP-IN DAYCARE: It's a working parents' greatest dilemma: the preschool is closed; your babysitter is sick; your neighbor is at work, where you are due in less than an hour. What to do? A company called Bright Horizons (www.brighthorizons.com) runs child care centers that will take drop-in kids if they have space. There are just three locations in greater L.A., and the hours, availability and price vary. See details at www.insidesocal.com/momspace/
ONLY IN L.A.: Being bilingual is all the rage in multicultural Los Angeles. You see it in elementary school immersion programs and parks & recreation classes, and now bilingualism is becoming part of everyday life, from Kindermusik classes to playgroups. My local Moms club just sent around an Evite for a bilingual playgroup for toddlers speaking English and Spanish, and the California Association for Bilingual Education has started parent workshops. Habla Espanol? It's time to learn! www.bilingualeducation.org.
BABYSITTER RATE POLL: I don't know about you, but I ended up paying a jacked up $22 an hour for a New Year's Eve babysitter because my husband announced at 4 pm that evening that a colleague was throwing a party that we just had to attend. The rate was through an agency I use only when I'm desperate. The sitters are always professional and wonderful, but it burns me to pay such crazy prices to someone to sit in my living room watching television. What's the most/least you've ever paid for a babysitter? What do you consider a reasonable rate? Participate in our poll at www.insidesocal.com/momspace/
FED UP: Two Angry Moms is a documentary by two Connecticut mothers "fed up'' with the low quality of school cafeteria food. They take a video camera to school to record students consuming neon green slushies, greasy fries and supersize cookies, and calling it lunch. The film has been making the rounds at community theaters since last spring in an effort to start a movement toward healthier school food. See clips of the film and more info at: www.angrymoms.org
SURVIVING TWEENS: Oh pre-teen and teenaged girls. The tortured soul, the raw emotion, the unbelievable sensitivity of young girls. I figure we have a good ten years until we'll be confronted with all this as parents, and I joke that my husband will be so old by then that a lot of the drama won't register. Still, it's never too early to prepare.
The current January/February issue of Daughters magazine focuses on nurturing the parent-daughter relationship during the angst-ridden tween years. Highlights include "girl-led'' conflict resolution, getting an inactive girl moving, and eating disorder 911. (www.daughters.com)
Natural/Organic cleaning!
The writing is on walls, floors and countertops throughout the house - that stinky chemical residue left behind by cleaning products may not be so healthy for you or the environment. The list of potential side effects: headaches, dizziness, memory loss, eye, respiratory and skin irritation and cancer. Yikes. And kids, who are prone to lolling about on the linoleum or popping fists in their mouths, are likely at a higher risk than the rest of us. Which is why the BabyGanics line of chem-free, non-toxic cleaning products is so genius. Unlike some green brands, this one is readily available at big box stores nationwide(even Wal-Mart!). So you don't have to go to the ends of the Earth to save the planet - or yourself from a panic attack the next time you catch Junior gobbling up Cheerios off the floor. http://www.babyganics.com/

Mortgage Broker Referral
Teresa would like to recommend Seth Caplan, owner of Suncoast Home Loans in Studio City, if you are having any concerns about your mortgage. Her mortgage is adjusting in the next couple of months and she thought that she had to refinance. He walked her through all of her options and gave her the piece-of-mind to know that we have a competitive loan and should not mess with it. Another friend of hers used him whose loan recently adjusted upward and became unfordable and quickly got a new low fixed rate loan which made it afordable. Seth is honest, straight forward, extremely knowledgable and quick to respond. You can reach him at seth at scloans.net or 818-424-8798. For a reference, you can email Teresa at teresa at TNTbuilding.com.
My Rapid MD
ICE gives the first responder a phone number to call once they pickup the victims/patients phone. When someone calls the ICE number at the scene of an accident or medical emergency they have to hope for the following:
1. Someone answers the phone
2. That the phone actually belongs to the person they found it on (If it is not on them it is of no use if someone is unconscious, incapacitated or incoherent).
3. Knows and is up to date with the person's medical conditions, medications, etc and contact info
4. The cell has no other information on it other than a phone number to call so the information is not immediate
5. And the information they supply is very basic, it's more of a tool to ensure that they can at least call someone that may know who you are in case of an emergency.ICE.
This is a viral campaign I'm sure that was started by the people or company that bought the rights to sell it in the USA. It is one of those quality V's quantity arguments and their goal is to get you to pay the $20 bucks a year for the 24/7 call center and ID cards. The biggest problem with all these types of solutions, Medic Alert included is third party involvement to get at the needed information. A much better solution, and one that is becoming quickly recognized by First Responders is the just the released (September 2007) Emergency Service Profile or ESP for cell
phones by a company called MyRapidMD: www.myrapidmd.com. This solution was designed by paramedics, emergency room nurses, firefighters for use by them in medical emergencies or accidents. Your emergency service profile is installed on your cell phone along with a photo of you; they just won an award (November 2007) as judged by EMS magazine as a top product and service of 2007. EMS magazine is the leading global authority on emergency services and products. The District Fire Rescue Chief for the city of Houston has just become their Emergency Services Advisory Chairman. PC magazine just came out with a study that says 78% of parents buy cell phones for their kids in case of an emergency, and as a mom I get that part of it pretty easily. Check out their website www.myrapidmd.com
