Karate - starting at 3 years old!
After searching and searching for the right Karate studio for our 5 yr old, my hubby finally found one that he is thrilled with and I wanted to share it with all of you. He was a part of the sport for over 10 years and we also have a dear friend that is well known in Karate world. Both have advised me of what's important to look for in a studio and what is important to stay away from. After viewing 5 different teachers/studios, we are thrilled with Linda Vogel at Little Ninjas Karate in Woodland Hills. Her classes start at 3 years old. They focus on teamwork, balance, fitness, respect and discipline. The classes are fast paced, fun filled, education and motivational. Asides from the phenomenal teacher that she is, the monthly fee is very reasonable, as is the registration. If you register online, you get the 1st month free. The 1st class you try is also complimentary. Age/skill appropriate classes run all week and on the weekends. They do birthday parties too. For more info, you can call her at 818-719-0205 or visit the website at www.littleninjaskarate.com. Let her know that you got the info from Jens List. I cant wait for my 2 1/2 yr old twins to turn 3 so that they can start!!!

Jericho
Jericho was canceled last year but due to overwhelming fan response upset about the cancellation, CBS decided to reorder the show and tape additional episodes for this season. This is pretty rare and a really great opportunity for the show. The first new episode is going to air on Tuesday, February 12th at 10:00pm. Everyone needs to know that the show is back on. If enough people watch it, it has a good chance of staying on the air. The fans who watch it, love it, but more people need to see it. http://www.cbs.com/primetime/jericho/

CAFFEINE-MISCARRIAGE LINK: This study was all over the news this week: Researchers at Kaiser Permanente found that women who consumed at least two cups of coffee a day had twice the risk for miscarriage. What didn't make the news was another study published in the journal Epidemiology, also published this month, that found no link between "moderate" consumption - maybe less than two cups - and miscarriage.
PAY TO PLAY? While more college freshmen are heading overseas for a semester, study-abroad programs are under scrutiny for possible kickback deals. Universities including Harvard, Cornell and Columbia are being asked to turn over documents that might show perks given to college administrators by study-abroad program providers.
COSTLY CARE: On average, Californians pay $7,000 to $10,000 annually per kid for licensed child care. It's the second-biggest monthly expense after shelter, and it's putting the squeeze on middle-class families. A special report by MSN Money looks at whether it makes financial sense for one parent to just stay home and includes a handy calculator to run those numbers. See http://moneycentral.msn.com/investor//calcs/n-spwk/main.asp.
GIRLS SURVIVAL GUIDE: "What Your Mother Never Told You," a new self-help book for teenage girls, covers such touchy subjects as peer pressure, how to deal with mean girls and protect yourself from manipulative boys. Written by a father of two boys andtwo girls, the book tells young women how to anticipate and avoid the wrong place and wrong time. http://whatyourmothernevertoldyou.net.
NO MORE NANNYGATE: I wrote last Sunday about the tax problems that can result when parents pay nannies under the table in cash. The IRS considers a nanny caring for your kids in your home to be your employee, so requires you to withhold and pay Social Security, Medicare and unemployment taxes if she earns more than $1,500 a year. Those who are caught can be subject to stiff fines and penalties. I received several responses to the article, including one from Tom Breedlove, a partner at L.A.-based Breedlove & Associates, which manages nanny payroll and tax services. He says there's another tax break available to most families that is twice as lucrative as the Child or Dependent Care Tax Credit and at least break even on employer tax costs for paying a nanny over the table. We have had to let our nanny go for financial reasons but she has been really wonderful and I'd like to help find her a new position as soon as possible. She would like to be in Westwood/West LA if possible and is available to start around the end of February. Here is more info: Jupi has been with us since May of 2007 when our son was five months old. She has taken care of him in our home 4-5 days per week since then and has been a warm and nurturing care provider for him. She is totally trustworthy and is like a member of the family. She's a great friend to our son and knows just what he needs and when he needs it. She takes him to the park or for walks and she is always full of energy. She's patient, reliable and has never called in sick. She has always been there when we need her and our son loves her. We are the third family that she has nannied for in the US. She also worked in a daycare in Berlin so she is experienced in caring for multiple children as well. Please feel free to contact us with any questions you may have. Thanks, Stephanie and Kameron Eliassian stephlev at msn.com 310-470-1743. We will be out of town thru 2/15 but will respond to questions after that. She can be contacted directly at jupi_28 at yahoo.com or on her cell at 310-746-6686
