>From Dia Collins
Dear friends of Jen's List:
We lost another Hero last Saturday evening when a LA County Fire Captain John Ellis was killed in a traffic collision in Lancaster. My family knew him personally and he assisted in coordinating many donations that were made through the Care First Organization to Fire Departments and many other disaster relief agencies. John was a true friend, a real life hero, a husband and father. His family is completely devastated as are his associates at the Fire Station and all those who knew him. There are many articles on line and you may have seen the recent coverage on the news or in print. I am attaching this link so that you can be assured that this is an honest request: http://cbs2.com/local/fire.captain.Ellis.2.791939.html
I would like to make a personal plea on behalf of the Care First Organization for donations to the family and Station. This can be in the way of cards, letters, gifts, baked goods, prepackaged food items, drawings from the kids (we sent them dozens a couple of months ago and they loved them!), gifts for the family, anything that you feel that you may be able to donate to these wonderful guys, gals, and especially the family. Although he was killed in an off duty accident - Fire Captain John risked his life endless times to protect families homes, property and lives. He was a true HERO. My friends and I will be coordinating deliveries to his home Station, LA County Fire Station #129 (Lancaster, CA) and also to the family. If you would like to drop off anything we will have several locations in the Valley: Burbank, North Hollywood, Chatsworth, Woodland Hills, Santa Clarita. Please take time to send a card if possible. LA County Fire Station #129 address is: 42110 6th Street West, Lancaster CA 93534. His wife Kristen Ellis, along with the kids (teens/twenties) would also appreciate your cards. The funeral is Thursday. They can be sent to the station and will be forwarded to the family. I can be reached directly through my email: DiaGCDesigns at aol.com
My thanks to all of you. Sincerely,
Dia Collins

Party on the Pier, a family friendly fundraiser for Mattel Children's Hospital UCLA
Sunday, September 7, from 11:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. at Pacific Park on the Santa Monica Pier.
Mattel Children's Hospital UCLA is a vital part of UCLA Medical Center, which has been ranked "Best in the West" for the 18 years that U.S. News & World Report has conducted its annual survey of America's hospitals. Last year's event raised nearly $650,000 and, once again, drew a sellout crowd of 1,400 attendees. Throughout the day, guests are treated to various festivities that included thrilling rides, carnival games brimming with Mattel toys, celebrity special guests, delicious food in our VIP tent (for event sponsors), and a fabulous silent auction. The funds raised from the event help support areas such as our Child Life/Child Development program, our pediatric chaplain, seed grants to young investigators, pediatric research in cancer, immunology, genetics and so much more. This year, some new activities have been added to Party on the Pier: Mattel is bringing its 40 foot Hot Wheels track. Kids of all ages enjoy racing Hot Wheel cars on this amazing track.
Our "Give Back Booth" is an opportunity for guests to give back some of the toys won at POP to other kids less fortunate in the Mattel Children's Hospital UCLA. A new Ferris wheel is up and running for our enjoyment. The world-famous solar powered Pacific Wheel Ferris wheel received an extraordinary make-over and the nine-story attraction is replaced with a contemporary state-of-the art Ferris wheel.
General admission tickets and sponsorship opportunities are still available but it always sells out! All donations make a difference in the lives of young seriously ill children and help to support pediatric research that reaches children locally and around the world. To purchase tickets or buy a sponsorship, visit: www.partyonthepier.ucla.edu

Stunning Australian Shepherd needs a home

Beautiful black tri female 1 year old Australian Shepherd named Pepper. She is primarily black with white feet, has a white chest and collar, and a gorgeous face that is white, tan, and black. Pepper is a little smaller than a typically Aussie which is nice for children and families who want a medium sized dog. She is somewhere between 38-40 pounds. Pepper comes from a championship show dog family of Aussies in which both her mother's and father's bloodlines have won numerous awards. She is extremely loving, affectionate, and is excited to see you. She is incredibly smart, friendly, and plays well with other dogs. Pepper is a happy and healthy girl, who has been spayed and has received all of her current shots. Owners want the best home for her and for her to be with an owner/family who can give her lots of attention, exercise, and playtime. She enjoys long walks/runs, hiking, playing Frisbee (she's quite impressive). She also has a certificate from Rover Kennels intensive 4 week doggie boot camp where she learned how to sit, stay, come, and walk obediently on your left side. Pepper will also come with her large crate, bed, toys, and 3 exercise pens. If interested, we also have an 6 sided outdoor kennel that is 10 feet by 5 feet with doghouse included. SMA is a relatively unknown disease but affects approx. 1/600 babies born each year
In April, 2008, Ellen Strong's six month old granddaughter was diagnosed as having Spinal Muscular Atrophy or SMA, the #1 genetic killer of infants under two years old. Ellens granddaughter has Type I, which is terminal, although there are other levels as well, but in most cases, children with SMA do not and cannot live a full or normal life. SMA is a degenerative disease that affects the voluntary muscles, so basically children with SMA, depending on the level, are paralyzed. They have particular trouble with swallowing, breathing and limb and neck movement. One in every 40 people are a carrier of SMA, but most do not know they carry it. Her family did not know they were carriers. Gwendolyn, is the result, however. Ellen's son and his wife, in their frustration with this disease, have established a petition to obtain support for an Act currently passing through Congress that will allocate funding through the National Institute of Health for more intensive research into a cure for SMA. The Act is the SMA Treatment Acceleration Act and is currently cosponsored by Barbara Boxer, Diane Feinstein, Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama, John Kerry and others. We are trying to get even more support, however, so the Act will be passed this year. SMA has been identified as the disease nearest a cure and if a cure for SMA is found, it will have substantial affects on cures for other neurological diseases such as Alzheimer's, Parkinson's,Lou Gerig\s and many others. If you go to www.gwendolynstrong.com there is a lot of information on SMA and the journey the family have gone through. The website also provides links to FightSMA, Families for SMA and the SMA Foundation which will give you more information on this disease. There is also a link to www.petitiontocuresma.com which will take people to the petition to sign it. This petition has the support of FightSMA and other SMA organizations and my granddaughter has basically become the poster child for this petition. There are links on the website to investigate and reach FightSMA, Families for SMA and the SMA Foundation, which are all in support of this Act. The petition is purely anonymous and will be used by FightSMA to further their ability to put pressure on Congress to pass this Act this year. When they started the petition a little over 3 weeks ago they were aiming for 1000 signatures. Now have nearly 11,000 signatures.
Please emai lohellenstrong at aol.com if you have any questions or need more information.

So Sexy So Soon
A new book by Diane E. Levin (CCFC co-founder) and Jean Kilbourne: So Sexy So Soon: The New Sexualized Childhood and What Parents Can Do to Protect Their Kids. Thong panties, padded bras, and risqué Halloween costumes for young girls. T-shirts that boast "Chick Magnet" for toddler boys. Sexy content on almost every television channel, as well as in books, movies, video games, and even cartoons. Hot young pop stars wearing provocative clothing and dancing suggestively while singing songs with sexual and sometimes violent lyrics. These prod ucts are marketed aggressively to our children; these stars are held up for our young daughters to emulate-and for our sons to see as desirable females. Without the emotional sophistication to understand what they are doing and seeing, kids are getting into increasing trouble emotionally and socially; some even engage in pre cocious sexual behavior. So Sexy So Soon is an invaluable and practical guide for par ents who are fed up, confused, and even scared by what their kids-or their kids' friends-do and say. Levin and Kilbourne, internationally recognized experts in early childhood development, understand that saying no to all commercial culture isn't a realistic or viable option for most families. In stead, they offer parents essential, age-appropriate strategies to counter the assault. Available at bookstores everywhere
