CHILDREN'S SOCIAL SKILL TRAINING GROUPS
Does your child/teen have trouble making and/or keeping friends or just doesn't seem to "fit in"?  Would you like to see your child improve his/her communication skills, grow as a leader, be respected by peers, and maneuver through peer pressure?  Is your child facing a transition to a new school in the fall?  If you answered yes to any of these questions - Eileen Zaroff, is a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist with more than 15 years of professional experience who specializes in social skill training groups, advocacy, and family behavioral contracting in addition to her individual, child and family therapy practice.  Eileen currently offers 16 different on-going social skill groups for children/teens, ages 6 to 22.  The groups focus on:
*communication skills such as reciprocal conversations, attentive listening, staying on topic, correct apologies, sincere compliments, which are worked on in each session   
*game playing in teams, with partners, or as individuals is also part of most group sessions  
*good sportsmanship, discussions about random luck and appropriate comments during games which make everyone feel accepted.  Board games, card games, art projects, role plays, and specific short movies relating to social behaviors are vehicles utilized as teaching tools. She also takes her groups on "outings" and will practice social skills in different environments such as restaurants, bowling alleys, parks, and movie theatres. Some subjects discussed in session range from: Arguments with friends/parents/siblings, making and keeping friends, learning how to invite someone over and how to choose activities that are acceptable to both children, how to deal with being left out, how to enter group conversations, party etiquette, and interest in the opposite sex - (although usually only in groups where the ages of the participants are over 12 years old). In addition to these groups, her practice also focuses on parenting for couples.  She will help parents create a Family Behavior Contract which deals with immediate issues like decreasing and eventually eliminating yelling and screaming (by both the children and the parents!) and issues regarding homework, chores, hygiene, and sibling behaviors.
