Karate - starting at 3 years old!
After searching and searching for the right Karate studio for our 5 yr old, we found one that we are thrilled with and I wanted to share it with all of you. Linda Vogel at Little Ninjas Karate in Woodland Hills has classes that start at 3 years old. They focus on teamwork, balance, fitness, respect and discipline. The classes are fast paced, fun filled, education and motivational. Asides from the phenomenal teacher that she is, the monthly fee is very reasonable(compared to other studios), as is the registration. If you register online, you get the 1st month FREE. The 1st class you try is also complimentary. Age/skill appropriate classes run all week and on the weekends. They do birthday parties too and have an enclosed toddler room for the little ones to play while an older sibling takes the class. For more info, you can call her at 818-719-0205 or visit the website at www.littleninjaskarate.com. Let her know that you got the info from Jens List. My almost 3 year olds can not wait to start and my oldest just got his Orange Belt last week! It's the best :O)

UNITED MOMS CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE
Many of you are aware of Governor Schwarzenegger's plan to radically slash the budget on public education. This is the wrong direction for our kids and California's future. Moms all over the city have gotten together to plan and stage a rally around the notion that the only thing Mothers really want for Mother's Day is a decent education for their kids. Come gather as many moms as we can up and down Wilshire Blvd, leading to our State Rep. Karen Bass office to let State leaders know that mothers are REALLY AGAINST this proposal. Assemblywoman Bass office is in full cooperation and will help make this a media event. They will have TV news crews and local newspaper reporters. They NEED YOUR SUPPORT TO MAKE OUR VOICES HEARD AND STOP THE BUDGET CUTS.
Friday, May 9th from 9-11am
5750 Wilshire Blvd in LA (Between Fairfax and LA Brea)
Outside of Assemblywoman Karen Bass office - Parking:Side streets off of Wilshire
What to wear: White
What to bring:Yourself and other moms who want to make a difference.
(Dads and men in general are invited as well) Signs available - but feel free to bring your own as well. Carpool and spread the word! The more people there, the greater impact they will have! If you have any questions or suggestions please contact: Maria von Hartz @ mvhla at yahoo.com or Victoria Hurley @ victoria at heliconpr.com

Teens now have a fitness 'hub' they can call their own!
Until O2 MAX opened its doors, gyms have traditionally catered to toddlers and young children or to adults 18 and over. Now, with O2 MAX, teens can focus on the mind/body/spirit in a parent-free zone designed for working out, hanging out, doing homework, meeting friends, downloading music or prepping for a test with a tutor from The Princeton Review---all at the gym! O2 MAX is the culmination of a dream for its founder, Karen Jashinsky, Certified trainer, nutritionist and MBA.She has spent the last four years training teens in schools, community centers, parks and anywhere else she could find space, laying the groundwork for O2 MAX. Last year she was recognized for the development of her visionary concept of a fitness 'hub' and safe haven for teens and named "One of the 25 young leaders in the fitness industry" by IHRSA (International Health, Racquet and Sportsclub Association), the fitness trade organization. She also started an annual free music and fitness festival for teens called ENERGY ROCKS, now in its third year. And last month she initiated an online "Prom/Summer Fitness Challenge" to empower teens from all over to gain insight into self-esteem and body image. She has authored articles on teen fitness, health and nutrition for LA Parent, LA Family and was herself, the subject of a five-part series called "Diary of a Startup" in ENTREPRENEUR MAGAZINE. She has stories to tell of my own challenges, including asthma as a child and a near-fatal bicycle accident as a young adult--- of her circuitous route from helping out in her parent's family-owned restaurant in New Jersey to packing her car and driving cross country alone to pursue my goals in the California sun. Feel free to email her at karen at 02maxfitness.com for more info.

Looking for a creative new idea for your school's parent/child event?
Almost every school schedules a parent/child event, be it father/daughter or mother/son or a combination of both. It is usually the same thing year after year. Well, 2 schools have just booked very creative and interesting events at the new and absolutely gorgeous XMA World Headquarters (www.XMAHQ.com). One school is hosting a mother/son event for elementary age children where each parent/child couple will learn the beautiful Brazilian Martial Art of Capoiera from a former Ringling Bros. Acrobat! Capoiera incorporates, movement with live music; and then they will all sit down to a tasty lunch! The other school is a preschool and they are having a fabulous father/child circus party where the kids & dads will jump on the trampoline, play in the foam pit and swing in the silks! XMA also has a full page ad in April's LA Parent which will give you $50 off a birthday/corporate party. Many more party possibilities are listed there, including a "Super hero training party" which will allow you to swing on the wires in a harness just like stunt people do in the movies! To get more birthday information call XMA at 818-980-2962, or to schedule a big event call the XMA special event coordinator Debra at 323-791-1252.
