'Breakfast With the Gibbons' Celebrates Rare Apes Annual Fundraiser Increases Awareness of Endangered Species
Saturday, April 12th from 8:30am to 12 noon
Most Angelenos have no idea that a sanctuary for endangered apes is right in their backyard! The Gibbon Conservation Center (GCC) maintains the largest group of gibbons (small apes) in the Western Hemisphere. On Saturday, April 12th, the GCC holds its annual fundraiser.
"Breakfast With the Gibbons" begins at 8:30 AM and lasts until noon. Guests enjoy a light vegan breakfast, have free time to observe the gibbons, go on a tour with Director / Founder Alan Mootnick, and bid on many silent-auction items. The breakfast is a great opportunity to see the Gibbons at their best as are most active in the morning hours, they display their amazing acrobatic and vocal abilities. All proceeds go to the care of the gibbons and the continuation of the work being done at GCC. Ticket prices: age 18 & up, $30; age 13-17, $15; age 3-12, $10; under 3 free. Advanced tickets are available via check (mail to GCC, PO Box 800249, Santa Clarita, CA 91380) or on line and are suggested to guarantee space: (www.gibboncenter.org/fundraiser.htm). Tickets at the gate are $5 more per person. The Gibbon Conservation Center is a 501(c)(3) charity and exists only on donations, memberships, grants, and retail sales of primate-related merchandise, such as tee shirts and plush dolls. "Breakfast With the Gibbons" is the main event of the year, though groups and individuals can arrange educational tours at other times. Fundraising is especially important this year, as GCC is facing challenges that necessitate a move to a larger property. Located at 19100 Esguerra Road in Santa Clarita (just minutes from Magic Mountain), GCC houses more than 30 gibbons, which are native to Southeast Asia. "Gibbons are endangered. We've had many births at GCC, and visitors to the breakfast will be able to see gibbons of all ages." You can also check out the center at www.GoneTrekkingAdventures.com as the Center is the Spotlight of the Month!

The monthly TOV events are designed to demonstrate how we can practice tikkun olam (healing the world). We will also connect you to a particular mitzvah (good deed) project. This month you will learn about how valuable animals are to humanity. Animals inhabit the world with us and provide so many purposes that enhance the quality of all our lives. Please bring an unwrapped new stuffed animal with you, as they will collect them to give to underprivileged children. Parking, which is free, is accessed on Sepulveda Blvd. Traveling south, turn right at the light on Herscher Way, which is just past the tunnel, (if you are traveling north, turn left). A security guard will greet you and direct you to the lobby where we will meet. Remember to allow yourself enough time to park and walk to the entrance. (it might be a little bit of a "shlep"). You may stay and enjoy other parts of Skirball following the tour. Food is available for purchase with food cart service featuring salads and sandwiches for purchase in the Ruby Gallery. For lunch, Zeidler's café offers a more complete menu (reservations recommended), call 310-440-4515. If you choose to brown bag it, there is ample casual seating in the amphitheatre and courtyards. Noah's Ark Exhibit - Imagine yourself immersed in a favorite childhood tale. Five years in the making and occupying an 8,000-square-foot gallery, Noah's Ark at the Skirball welcomes children and families to take this journey together. Inspired by the ancient flood story, which has parallels in diverse cultures around the world, this one-of-a-kind new destination invites visitors of all generations to have fun-and to connect with one another, learn the value of community, and help build a better world. Inside a floor-to-ceiling wooden ark, filled to the rafters with whimsical animals, you and your family will play, build, climb, explore, collaborate, and more. Conduct a storm, help construct the ark, and bask in the glow of a beautiful rainbow. Mingle with hundreds of fanciful animals-from cuddly companions to life-sized puppets-all crafted from recycled materials and everyday objects, including bottle caps, bicycle parts, baseball mitts, croquet balls, mop heads, and rear-view mirrors. Knowing the answer will give your child confidence in school, trust in his learning style and a head start for life long educational success. Join Kim Hamer and:
· Discover "how your child is smart"
· Learn why it matters to both you and your child
· Use the information to help your child be successful in school
· Build your child's confidence
Tuesday April 15th from 7:00-9:00 PM at the Franklin Elementary School Library
Kim Hamer's children have been homeschooled and have attended public, religious and independent schools, while she searched for an education to match each of her children's unique learning styles. Kim discovered a powerful tool, an assessment developed by Mariaemma Willis and Victoria Kindle Hudson, that gives her children confidence in how each of them learns, allows for productive conversations with teachers and gives her faith in her children's educational future. This talk will review the assessment as well as Willis and Hudson's book Discover Your Child's Learning Style. Kim Hamer is CEO of GetIntoPrivateSchool.com, a company dedicated to demystifying the elementary and secondary private school admissions process.
