A letter from my brother, James, who is currently in Kathmandu, Nepal, where he is staying for the next two months:
Most of you already know that I am involved with an organization that brings medical doctors to remote communities in Nepal, but you might not know exactly the extent of my involvement and the why... here's the story.
This country is wildly beautiful and emotionally challenging beyond belief, home to abject poverty and deplorable living conditions. In Kathmandu alone, there are upwards of 7000 homeless children, all are underweight, mal-nourished, dirty, suffering from serious infections and addicted to substances (glue being the most prevalent). This is'nt hard to imagine when you take into account that they dig through filth and garbage to find food. What's worse is the fact that ¾ of Nepalese mothers cannot see a physician even once during their pregnancy, and around 95% of women in rural Nepal give birth without a skilled health professional.
In stark contrast to city life, mountain communities rarely have access to clean water, electricity, schools and medicine. They live extreme lives, walking several hours just to fill buckets of water, and several days to sell produce. They lack proper housing are are highly susceptible to floods, fires, earthquakes, and landslides; the fumes from kerosene lamps and chimney-less stoves cause devastating heart and lung diseases. Patients from these areas arrive at district and national hospitals too late, with end-stage diseases and complicated infections. In leaving their farms and homes to attend a sick relative in the hospital, family members incur huge amounts of debt in paying for food, transportation and lodging, bearing in mind that 70% of Nepalis live on less than $2 a day, this is nothing other than tragic.
Our mission is to avoid these problems through outreach programs focusing on health education, preventative medicine and early detection/ treatment of chronic illnesses. I am one of two directors for our team of an Ob/Gyn, a cardiologist, a mountaineering expert, a handful of Nepali nurses and several assistants. Together we travel over long distances with advanced diagnostic equipment, vitamins, and medications to reach our target areas.
Imagine a person with a high-grade fever, severe heart disease, a stroke or a baby on the way. In dry weather, able-bodied individuals can reach a hospital in 3 days... a person with medical problems might never survive the journey. At present, we take an EKG machine to help in screening for cardiovascular diseases. We are a quarter of the way in raising $20,000 to purchase a portable ultrasound machine, equipment for advanced cardiovascular and prenatal investigations. This will enable our doctors to catch complicated medical problems in the early stages of illness, before drastic and expensive medical procedures are needed.
Please dig into your couch cushions and your hearts for something to give. No amount is too little. Ask your friends, ask your coworkers, ask your parents. Consider the cost of a latté at Starbucks. Forgo that morning cup of coffee or that impulse buy; instead make a donation to build a healthier future for the impoverished and underprivileged people in Nepal. This is the real deal, a project that will help our global community, and benefit the poorest people in one of the poorest countries in the world. Our American staff has the highest level of commitment - we pay for our own airfare and living expenses without any reimbursement from our foundation. The satisfaction that we receive from our work is compensation enough and I personally see to it that every dollar we receive helps those who need it the most.
Donations can be made directly to the Dorjhana Foundation. You can easily charge a donation to your credit card from our website, http://www.dorjhanafoundation.org - all donations are 100% TAX DEDUCTIBLE per IRS section 501(c)3. Unfortunately, I wasnt able to figure out how to make the website communicate with netscape navigator, so please visit us on explorer, safari, or firefox.
We will gladly email you a receipt for your contribution. The payment service won't take a commission for transactions made before January 31, 2008, so please, do this now and send this email to your friends and encourage them to do the same. Nepali people have strong values, warm hearts, and gentle spirits. They deserve better. This is your chance to help! We are always interested in recruiting volunteers for our organization to help us with our public relations and fundraising. Please contact me at jsbanks3 at gmail.com if you're interested ;-)
Thank you for your time and consideration. I hope this message reaches you in good health and good spirits.
Sincerely yours,
James Banks - jsbanks3 at gmail.com
Secretary and Director of Development, Dorjhana Foundation
